Reese Witherspoon thinks Hollywood is "centuries behind" when it comes to gender equality.
The 'Wild' actress has slammed the film industry, claiming its views on gender disparity are outdated and insisting bosses don't accurately represent women in movies.
When asked if she considers herself to be a feminist, the 38-year-old star said: "Obviously I'm a feminist, and I'm incredibly aware of the huge, huge problems [with gender disparity] in Hollywood.
"I mean, it's like, are we a century behind there in that world?"
However, Reese - who plays Cheryl Strayed in 'Wild', based on the memoir of the same name - heaped praise on the film's director Jean-Marc Vallee and screenplay writer Nick Hornby for their sensitive approach to making the film, which details a woman's journey of self-discovery.
Speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, she said: "But I think Nick and Jean-Marc have feminist sensibilities. They're men, but they are comfortable really both helping and allowing women to tell their stories."
Even the book's writer Cheryl expressed her concerns about her story being translated into a movie.
She said: "It's actually a challenging concept for a film, frankly, 'Oh, gee, a woman's walking alone through the wilderness. Let's make it a movie!' "

Angelina Jolie thinks she'd be a "better wife" to Brad Pitt if she was a more skilled cook.
The 39-year-old actress accepts she has limited kitchen skills and she believes her 50-year-old husband would like it if her array of dishes was bigger, but Brad insists he loves her just the way she is.
In an interview on the 'Today' show, she said: "We have moments where I say, 'I'm going to be a better wife! I'm going to learn to cook,' and he says, 'Oh honey, know what you're good at, know what you're not.' He knows my limitations and where I'm a good wife and a good mom."
The Academy Award-winning star also opened up on her wedding to Brad in the South of France in August and admitted she was surprised that being married made her feel differently about Brad and their family.
Speaking about the nuptials, she explained: "It did change (things). It was in just a feeling of that security and comfort that we always had, but recommitting after 10 years together. And we were fortunate enough to be in that unusual situation where we got married with our children, and they were a part of the ceremony and they wrote some of the vows. So it was all of us agreeing to be together and to commit to this life together - not because we had to, not because anything was missing in our lives, but because we were absolutely sure. It was really lovely, it was a lovely day."
Angelina and Brad raise six children together, Maddox, 13, Pax, 10, Zahara, nine, Shiloh, eight, and six-year-old twins Knox and Vivienne.

Kristen Bell has donated $91,500 worth baby supplies to pregnant women.
The pregnant actress - who has 20-month-old daughter Lincoln with husband Dax Shepard and is expecting their second child - admitted giving out nursing bras and breast pumps to those in need was a "huge priority" in her life.
She said in a statement: "I understand the importance of having the essential tools necessary to provide for a newborn. Greater still, I am aware of the immeasurable value of having support systems in place to ensure success on this journey of motherhood.
"Anything I can offer in support and care to new moms in need remains a huge priority to me."
The 'Frozen' star recently admitted she and Dax, 39, have been a lot more relaxed during her second pregnancy and insisted it is "not overly stressful" looking after a newborn.
She said: "There's been zero nursery prep... we're just going to push it around in a bassinet. Caring for a newborn is pretty stressful, but not overly so - just feed it and keep it clean."
Kristen has been kept busy during her pregnancy by teaching Lincoln sign language, and revealed the youngster, who she has dubbed the "smartest baby ever", already knows "40-50 signs".
The 'Veronica Mars' star explained: "She signs a lot, which is nice. There's a lot of research to suggest that they will be happier if they can communicate before their verbal scores are developed.
"There's a time when they can understand everything you're saying but their verbal scores don't exist."
"I can talk to her and she'll sign in three, four word sentences which is really amazing. She'll come in the kitchen and be like [signing] 'More crackers please!' And I'm like, 'Yes, okay!' "

Olly Murs cannot wait to have Christmas at home this year because he hasn't tasted his mum's cooking in 2014.
The 'Heart Skips A Beat' hitmaker has admitted he cannot wait to have a family Christmas and gorge on a lovely home-cooked meal over the festive period because he feels "bad" about not going home at all this year.
He said: "I'm most looking forward to eating at my mum's (this Christmas). I haven't had a dinner at my mum's this year and that is pretty bad. I am really looking forward to having her roast dinner."
While he is excited about his upcoming family Christmas, Olly doesn't expect any year to ever top the unforgettable Christmas Day when he received a Sega Megadrive games console, which he still regards as his best ever present.
Speaking at the Amazon.co.uk Fulfilment Centre yesterday (24.11.14), where took part in a Christmas present gift wrapping challenge, he added: "My favourite ever Christmas memory is the year I got a Sega Megadrive, I will never forget it, it was my first real games console.
"We didn't have much money at Christmas and I got that so it was a big thing."
While the 30-year-old singer has been too busy to visit his mother since the start of the year, writing his fourth album 'Never Been Better', releasing the record's first single 'Wrapped Up' and appearing in Band Aid 2014 Christmas single, he has still found time to cook his own food.
The star recently revealed he likes to hold barbecues over the summer period but his pals One Direction always used to say they were "too busy" to attend.
He said: "I always invite the 1D boys to my BBQs but they're too busy.
"My trick is to cook the chicken for a really long time. There's been no food poisoning yet!"

Britain's Prince Charles' motto is "make do and mend".
The 66-year-old royal is known for his thrifty ways and drew further attention to his frugal habits last week when he took part in a Google webchat from his London residence Clarence House and his threadbare, frayed sofa was clear to see.
A source told the Daily Mail newspaper: "His Royal Highness won't throw anything out. Make do and mend is the order of the day."
Last year, Charles had a visible patch sewn into a suit he wore while visiting the set of TV drama 'Doctor Who', which a spokesperson said at the time was likely due to "wear and tear" due to the age of the garment, adding it would soon be replaced by an "invisible" patch.
He even has a pair of shoes made from 18th century leather which he previously said will "see me out".
In 2013, the prince featured on a special edition of UK TV show 'Countryfile' wearing an old gardening jacket that had had so many holes and tears covered, he struggled to be fully mobile.
He admitted: "I got somebody to patch it up with leather and now I can hardly move."

Delta Goodrem is returning to 'Neighbours'.
The 30-year-old singer-songwriter will reprise her role as Nina Tucker for a three episode stint to celebrate the Australian soap's 30th anniversary in 2015.
Confirming the news on her Twitter account, she wrote: "I am so excited to be making a guest appearance as my character Nina for neighbors special 30th anniversary xx (sic)."
In a further tweet, the star posted a photo of the cast from 2002 and said: "Look out Ramsey street I'm back.... #ninareturns #30thanniversaryspecial xx (sic)."
The blonde beauty was a regular on the show between 2002 and 2003, but hasn't been seen on Ramsay Street since 2005, when she featured as part of the show's 20th anniversary celebrations.
Writers for the show have not yet revealed details of the storyline in which the actress will be involved, but it's believed her return may focus on her character's musical ability.
Speaking about Delta's comeback, series producer Jason Herbison said: "It's natural that music would somehow be involved. Having Delta join us for this momentous occasion is the icing on the cake, we are delighted."
The announcement follows news that the iconic Erinsborough residents Harold and Madge Bishop, played by Ian Smith and Anne Charleston, will be returning to the show for the milestone.
In August rumours of a return from fellow singing superstar Kylie Minogue began to circulate now that her on-screen son, Daniel Robinson, is on the show.
However, the star - who played Charlene in the soap - has since shut down hopes for a comeback.
She told ITV London: "It's just not happening. It's just a little rumour that got legs."

Angus Young admits Phil Rudd had been acting "strangely" before his arrest.
The AC/DC drummer was arrested earlier this month and will appear in court on Thursday (27.11.14) to answer charges of making threats to kill and possession of illegal substances and his bandmate believes the musician had been having problems for some time.
Angus told Triple M's The Grill Team: "He's in a strange place, in a strange situation
"It's something we have to get resolved, if we're going forward, something has to get resolved.
"We had a few problems ourselves before he got into this situation. There was a lot of strange behaviour going on. I guess you could put it down to him just not showing up for a lot of what we were doing and when you have to get to a stage where you have to convince someone to be there, you know it wears thin after a while - but it's something we have to resolve."
The group are planning to tour their new album 'Rock or Bust' next year but are unsure whether the troubled rocker will be joining them on the road.
Angus admitted: "It is a bit of a question mark...we go back a long way, he is a great drummer, but I think over these last few years, I don't know what he's got into or anything - I guess it doesn't help the situation that he's in."
AC/DC were further shaken this year when rhythm guitarist Malcolm Young - Angus' older brother - had to be admitted to a care home after developing dementia.

Pharrell Williams says recording a song for the 'Paddington' soundtrack was a "wonderful opportunity".
The 'Happy' hitmaker - who has five-year-old son Rocket with wife Helen Lasichanh - has teamed up with his 'The Voice' co-coach Gwen Stefani to record 'Shine', which will be released in support of the new family adventure, which is based on Michael Bond's popular children's books.
Pharrell said: "What a wonderful opportunity, as a parent, to contribute to something as classic, authentic and generational to all of our lives, as Paddington Bear."
And Gwen - who has previously worked with Pharrell on 'Hollaback Girl', 'Can I Have It Like That' and 'Spark the Fire' - said she was "honoured" to collaborate with the star again and be a part of "Paddington's next big adventure".
Movie bosses are equally thrilled to have the pair on board for the project and think they have created the perfect track for the adventuring bear, who is voiced by Ben Whishaw.
The Weinstein Company's Bob Weinstein said: "Pharrell and Gwen are the perfect artistic duo and they truly brought to life the charm that Paddington represents in the terrific song 'Shine'.
"We are so proud to have them be a part of this classic film."

Reese Witherspoon didn't want to shoot the emotionally raw sex scenes in her new film 'Wild'.
The 38-year-old actress portrays Cheryl Strayed in the movie adaptation of her memoir, 'Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail', and she admits it was tough recreating the drug-fuelled lovemaking detailed in the book - which is about Cheryl's 1,100-mile hike of self-discovery along the Pacific Crest Trail.
Reese said: "I remember thinking, 'I just don't want to do it.' But I had to make a choice as an artist. And Cheryl was brave enough to tell all the parts of her story in her book - the parts that probably made her feel incredibly uncomfortable and would be hard to tell her children and would be difficult to relive. I couldn't honour and do justice to her story by just picking the parts that I was comfortable with."
The Oscar winner secured the film rights to the memoir in 2012 and was totally committed to bringing Cheryl's story to the big screen, describing the tome as "one of the most important books I've ever read in my life".
Cheryl decided to go backpacking at the age of 26 to re-evaluate her life after a succession of devastating events which began with the death of her mother died when she was 22, her becoming estranged from her stepfather, developing a strained relationship with her siblings, taking heroin and getting divorced from her husband.
During filming on location in Oregon and California, Reese admits she phoned her husband Jim Toth in tears, fearing she had taken on too big a task.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, she recalled: "I call my husband crying. I said, 'I ain't taking this. It's so cold.' I mean, it's really just freezing cold and windy. He said, 'When you optioned this book and decided to make a movie called 'Wild', what did you think it was going to be like?' I was like, 'F**k you!'
Referring to the emotional challenges of Cheryl's story, she added: "Like one day on set I was getting divorced, and the next day my mother died. And the next day I was having sex with a stranger and shooting heroin."
Reese Witherspoon struggled with Wild sex scenes
Reese Witherspoon didn't want to shoot the emotionally raw sex scenes in her new film 'Wild'.
The 38-year-old actress portrays Cheryl Strayed in the movie adaptation of her memoir, 'Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail', and she admits it was tough recreating the drug-fuelled lovemaking detailed in the book - which is about Cheryl's 1,100-mile hike of self-discovery along the Pacific Crest Trail.
