Nathan Sykes: Songwriting is like therapy

Nathan Sykes has reflected on The Wanted’s split in a new song.
The ‘Kiss Me Quick’ hitmaker has revealed he has addressed his feelings towards the band’s hiatus in his new single, ‘I Can’t Be Mad’, and found it quite therapeutic.
He told The Sun newspaper: "I was in such a dark place when I wrote that. There was a time just before the end where it was really, really dark. It was all happening, a couple of us were in quite a bad place.
"We had lost family members, been through break-ups and all sorts and it all took its toll at once. Then we decided we were going to take a break. It lifted the weight off our shoulders a bit. It wasn’t until I started writing in those sessions where I was like, ‘God, I really had a tough time.’ Reflecting on it was like therapy."
Meanwhile, the 23-year-old singer previously admitted he didn’t feel he was right for a boy band.
He shared: "At school, when an audition came in for you, your name would get highlighted on the list. Literally, the whole of Year 11, which was like 10 people, was highlighted. So, there’s an audition for a boyband. I was like, ‘No, no’. I imagined old school boybands: everyone in the same clothes, air-grabbing, standing up on the key change …
"Sylvia [Young] was like, ‘You need to do this. You’re not going to regret it.’ I was 16 and most the guys auditioning were at least 21. There was no way on planet Earth I’m gonna get this."
