Robert Downey Jr has revealed 'Sherlock Holmes 3' is in development.
Speaking during a question and answer session on Reddit, the 49-year-old actor - who starred in the two earlier Sherlock Holmes films - confirmed that the third instalment in Guy Richie's series is in the works.
Asked whether there are plans in place to make another movie, Downey Jr remarked: "Yes, we have a Sherlock 3 in development. We want it to be the best of the series, so that's a pretty tall order."
The news follows various hints offered by other people involved in the two earlier films, the last of which was 'Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows' in 2011.
Last year, for instance, Downey Jr's co-star Jude Law - who plays the role of Dr. John Watson - said he believed writing had already started on the much-anticipated third movie.
Meanwhile, Downey Jr recently suggested he will continue to play the role of Iron Man in the Marvel films.
He is contractually obliged to play the iconic character in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron' - which he's already completed filming - as well as another 'Avengers' movie.
But Downey Jr has also hinted he will continue to play the role thereafter, telling The Hollywood Reporter: "I'm sure we'll ride that thing. You've got to surf that all the way in to shore."
He added: "I think I was at the forefront of something that was coming into being, and I think it has carried me as much as I have informed it."

Kerry Washington will star in 'Is He The One'.
According to Deadline.com, the 37-year-old actress is set to take on the lead role in the romantic comedy after MGM acquired the rights to the film.
Company bosses and the raven-haired beauty are now said to be brokering a deal for her to take on the main character, a bride-to-be - who is seen dressing for her wedding day in between flashbacks of her past relationships - leaving the audience guessing who will be at the end of the altar.
The movie will be directed by Malcolm D. Lee - who previously helmed 'The Best Man' and 'The Best Man Holiday' - with a script penned by DJ Richardson and Michelle Morgan.
Tod Garner has also signed up to produce the picture.
Kerry previously appeared in 'Django Unchained' and stars in the Emmy Award-winning TV show 'Scandal'.
The pretty actress recently admitted she almost gave up the role in the drama series while debating whether to make the jump from movies onto the small screen after landing a role in the Quentin Tarrantino-directed picture.
She said: "At first I thought, 'Why would I want to do a TV show, I have a flourishing movie career?' But it's so rare that we see a woman on top of the story that the more I read of the scripts, the more I was hooked into it."

The upcoming 'Fantastic Four' movie has been given a "new look".
According to one of the film's stars Michael B. Jordan - who plays Johnny Storm/The Human Torch in the superhero action picture - he and his co-stars' costumes are much different to those seen in the 2005 and 2007 versions of the movie.
He told ABC News: "It's a new look.
"We are all in containment suits. The costume process definitely took some time to get in and out of that thing, especially since I was bulking up.
"It was a little more snug during filming. We got through it man. It was a process, but we did it. It was hard work."
It isn't the first time Jordan has hinted that the superhero movie is taking a different approach than previous comic book flicks.
He said earlier this year: "It's not your typical superhero film.
"We aren't looking at this as like, being superheroes. We're more or less a bunch of kids that had an accident and we have disabilities now that we have to cope with, and try to find a life afterwards."
Scriptwriter Simon Kinberg has also promised the ambitious reboot of the superhero franchise will be unlike anything fans have seen before in the genre.
He said: "We are hopefully going to be refining the way the people see the 'Fantastic Four' movies. There are so many things we are doing different from the previous film and so many things different from other comic books films."
The new take also stars Kate Mara as Sue Storm/The Invisible Woman, Miles Teller as Reed Richards/Mr. Fantastic, and Jamie Bell as Ben Grimm/The Thing.

Tamsin Egerton had to act with pee "all over" her on the set of 'Love, Rosie'.
The 25-year-old actress - who stars in the new romantic comedy alongside Lily Collins, Sam Claflin and Suki Waterhouse - confessed she was forced to shoot scenes for the movie covered in urine after a baby she was filming with began peeing on her on set.
Speaking at the world premiere of the film at the Odeon cinema in London's Leicester Square last night (06.10.14), she said: "I have a baby in the film in a bath on my own and we used a newborn. During a take he started peeing all over me, so I was there acting with warm baby urine all over me, which was really, really fun!"
In spite of the unfortunate incident, the blonde beauty thoroughly enjoyed filming the new picture and spent a lot of time with her co-stars on and off the Dublin-based set.
The film's director, Christian Ditter, even encouraged the cast mates to joke around during filming as it made the atmosphere of the movie "buoyant" and "fun".
She said: "It was great because we are all so young and we got on incredibly well. There was a lot of joking around, a lot of silliness and a lot of one-liners from people.
"If we were getting on, [Christian] just liked the free movement of it. What makes the film comedic is the spontaneity. I think once you've done [a scene] too many times it loses its charm and I think Christian knew that, so he kept everyone buoyant, fun and used things that happened in the moment."

Ben Affleck insists 'Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice' will not be another 'Daredevil'.
The 42-year-old, who is preparing to play the iconic role, has promised fans that the eagerly-awaited superhero film will not be a repeat of 20th Century Fox's 2003 movie, which was panned by critics.
He told NPR: "Indeed I have regrets about 'Daredevil'.
"I have regrets about all the movies that I don't think were executed properly. Look, if I thought we were remaking 'Daredevil', I'd be out there picketing myself."
He added: "I'm hard on myself, and I have exacting standards and I want to do excellent work and I don't always succeed, but I think you have to start out with that drive."
The 'Argo' actor also praised the behind-the-scenes team working on the much-hyped new film.
He said: "It was written by Chris Terrio, who wrote Argo, who's not a comic guy. And it's directed by Zack Snyder, who's an incredibly magical sort of visual stylist, who's steeped in the comic world.
"And you have this sandwich of talents. I felt very confident about it. I thought it would be nice to make one of these movies really, really good."

Al Pacino says Christopher Nolan is "miffed" with him.
The 74-year-old actor explained that he's not being offered a role in a Nolan-directed film since he declined the chance to appear in one of them.
Pacino told the Daily Telegraph newspaper: "He hasn't offered me a film in a while, you know why?
"He asked me to be in this movie and I didn't do it. I think that might have miffed him a little bit, but I'm being presumptuous myself."
Pacino starred in Nolan's 2002 thriller 'Insomnia', but refused to reveal which film he turned down.
By contrast, Sir Michael Caine said last week that he considers Nolan to be his "lucky charm".
The pair have worked together on six films - including 'Inception' and the 'Batman' franchise - and Caine, 81, hailed the achievements of his collaborator during 'A Night Out With... Sir Michael Caine' at the Royal Albert Hall in London.
When he was asked what people can expect from their new sci-fi movie 'Interstellar', Caine told BANG Showbiz: "Fans can expect something entirely different from what we've done before like Inception and Batman.
"Take my word for it, the film is going to be extraordinary."
He added: "It's no surprise to me because I think Nolan is the best British director since David Lynne."

Talking about the painful incident on 'Good Morning Britain' today (06.10.14), Luke said: "The ones in the film are much, much bigger [than my own] - I had two different sets, the really long ones, that they would have for just biting moments, and then the ones I could talk and do action with but [they] still pierced my lip quite a few times, horrible!
"I'm fighting with [the fangs] and sword fighting and I just kept piercing my lip all the time - it wasn't very good."

Gerard Depardieu worked as a male escort before being spotted by a theatre scout.
The French actor has revealed that he was a gigolo and petty thief before he found a career as an actor.
In his new autobiography, 'That's the Way it Was', the 65-year-old star told the writer Lionel Duroy: "I've known since I was very young that I please homosexuals.
"I would ask them for money."
After serving some time in prison as a teenager for stealing a car, Gerard returned to escorting, and eventually mugging, to earn more money.
He wrote: "At 20, the thug in me was alive and kicking. I would rip some of them off. I would beat up some bloke and leave with all his money."
The actor - who is best known for his role in 1990 movie, 'Green Card' - was eventually spotted by a talent scout, who saved him from a life on the streets.
Gerard raised eyebrows in 2008 when he became friends with the controversial Russian president, Vladimir Putin.
In reference to their relationship, he explained in his book: "We could have both become hoodlums. I think he immediately liked my hooligan side ... the fact that I had occasionally been picked up off the pavement dead drunk.
"Like with me, nobody would have betted a penny on him when he was 15."
