Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy reveals The Wombats are ‘nearly ready’ to record their next album

The Wombats are “nearly” ready to record their next album.

The rock band – which consists of Matthew ‘Murph’ Murphy, Tord Øverland Knudsen, and Dan Haggis – released their chart-topping fifth studio album ‘Fix Yourself, Not the World’ in 2022 and now frontman Matthew, 39, has teased that the follow-up will soon be on the way.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: “I’ve been writing a lot and Dan and Tord are just here in LA and we’re working together and writing together. It’s in a good it’s in a good place. And I think we’re hoping to get going sooner rather than later. So yeah, it’s nearly there. We haven’t started recording but it’s getting to the stage where we need to choose what we’re going to record.”

The ‘Moving to New York’ hitmakers released their first album almost 20 years ago and Murph explained that he was “glad” that social media wasn’t around when they rose to fame because they managed to avoid the “craziness” that sometimes comes with finding success online.

He said: “We’re told that we need to have our presence on there, but we’re not very good at it. I’m not very good at it. I don’t know. I’m not…I’m not a gifted self-promoter or self-marketer. It seems to have the ability to shoot you up and drop you back down really fast.

“I’m kind of glad that that wasn’t the case when we started as a band because our trajectory has always been like a boring incremental up. Also, it feels like there’s been no kind of craziness really.

“And I think we’ve benefited from the not being loaded craziness, but I don’t know, I guess if you do get catapulted to the top, you got to strap in and then be willing to put in all the hard work that that most artists did before they got to that level. “

Away from the band, Matthew has developed a solo career under the name Love Fame Tragedy and explained that his latest album ‘Life Is a Killer’ was borne out of a desire to record again under normal circumstances after the first was done during restrictions brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic.

He said:”The inspiration was the stuff that I was going through internally over the over that kind of one and a half year period, but that also what really it’s kind of what drove me to do another one was really the fact that the first one came out in the middle of a pandemic. And I felt like I needed to I needed to go and do it again.

Love Fame Tragedy’s new album ‘Life Is A Killer’ is out now via Bright Antenna Records.
