Mary J. Blige believes there is a "divine plan" for her life.
The 45-year-old singer is "saddened" to have filed for divorce from her husband and manager, Martin ‘Kendu’ Isaacs, after 12 years of marriage but believes everything happens for a reason.
Her spokesperson told People in a statement: "Ms. Blige is saddened to say it is true that she has filed for divorce, saying sometimes things don’t work how we hoped they would.
"But, there is a divine plan and a reason for everything."
The ‘Family Affair’ hitmaker has thanked her fans for their support since the news broke of the split – which divorce papers state was due to irreconcilable differences – and is throwing herself into her work.
The representative added: "Mary will continue writing and working on her album which is due out later this year along with her world tour.
"She thanks and appreciates her fans for their support and love through this very difficult emotional time."
According to TMZ, for unclear reasons the split date is stated in the documentation as "to be determined", and singer has asked the courts to deny spousal support.
It is not clear if the couple – who don’t have children together – had a pre-nuptial agreement.
Mary previously admitted having both a personal and professional relationship with her spouse could be tough.
She said in 2014: "He always has my back – he’s going to fight to the death for Mary J. Blige. The downside is that there’s no separation – it’s on all the time.
"When you don’t feel like answering to your manager, he’s still your husband. If one of you doesn’t want to talk about something right now, you have to respect that. And you have to respect each other’s space."
The ‘No More Drama’ singer has also confessed that she and her spouse forbade one another from having friends of the opposite sex in case it damaged their marriage.
She said: "All females for me, all guys for him. There’s none of that, ‘Oh, that’s my female friend. Oh, that’s my guy friend.’ No. Not in a marriage, I’ve never seen that work."
