Martin Kemp opens up about drugs bender at height of fame

Martin Kemp says an eight-hour drugs bender at the height of his Spandau Ballet fame was "one of the best nights of my life".
The ‘Let It Shine’ judge lived a "rock n’ roll" lifestyle during his time in the band and opened up about one particular party where he took Mescaline, an LSD-style drug, with his friend Steve Strange.
He told the Daily Star Sunday: "We get there and it is this massive white house and the first thing I see to my right is this room and in it, completely black with no lights on, was about 50 or 60 people all around the walls of this room going ‘buzz, buzz’.
"I looked at it thinking, ‘what the f**k is going on in there?’ Twenty minutes later I am there going ‘buzz, buzz’. Everybody in this party had taken the drug called Mescaline. Now I am not telling you to try it, I am just saying this is what happens."
Despite waking up covered in blood, Martin called it one of the best nights of his life.
He added: "When I got home, I was lying in bed and I started picking my nose, like you do, and all of a sudden I felt as if I was one of the seven dwarfs and up my nostrils was, like, gold. And I was picking it off from the side of the cave.
"I woke up in the morning and there was blood everywhere – but it was one of the best nights I have ever had."
Meanwhile, Martin, 55, also revealed he suffers from tinnitus – a relentless ringing sound in his head – and high-frequency hearing loss, due to his time in the band.
He told the Mail On Sunday: "There is a whistling in my ears all the time.
"During the day I don’t notice it, but as soon as it goes quiet, or I’m in bed, I can hear it. It drives me a bit crazy sometimes.
"I went to have a test because of the tinnitus and was taken aback when the audiologist said that I have hearing loss.
"But it’s not surprising considering I’ve been in the music industry since I was 17."
