Lasse Hallström says working with Steven Spielberg is ‘heavenly’

Lasse Hallström found working with Steven Spielberg to be "heavenly".

The 68-year-old director helmed the 2014 comedy-drama film ‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ after he was drafted into the role as Spielberg’s replacement, but has revealed how much he cherished working with the acclaimed film-maker, who served as a producer on the movie based on Richard Morais’ 2010 novel with the same name.

He exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "I hadn’t read the book before taking on the project. I got the script that was based on that book, which was faithful to it.

"This was meant to be a Steven Spielberg-directed movie. As he abandoned the project, I got on board. Already, Dame Helen Mirren was on board. So, I was the quick replacement of Mr Spielberg."

Hallström was due to direct the 2002 movie ‘Catch Me If You Can’, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, but it was ultimately Spielberg who took the role.

He explained: "It was fantastic to get to work with Steven as a producer – I always wanted to do that.

"I had a project many years ago, where I was supposed to direct and he was supposed to produce called ‘Catch Me If You Can’.

"But it ended up being Spielberg taking over that time. That was how I got to know him and I got to work with him this time – it was heavenly, I must say."

‘The Hundred-Foot Journey’ is available on Blu-ray and DVD now, courtesy of Entertainment One.
