Katy Perry to co-headline Rock The Vote’s Democracy Summer 2020 virtual event

Katy Perry will co-headline Rock The Vote’s ‘Democracy Summer 2020’ virtual concert.

The ‘Daisies’ singer – who is pregnant with her first child with fiance Orlando Bloom – joins Black Eyed Peas as the headliners for the special event on June 18, which aims to encourage US citizens to register to vote.

Organisers Rock the Vote, Voto Latino Foundation, When We All Vote and March For Our Lives have set a goal of 200,000 new voters this summer.

The 35-year-old pop star has called on the nation to use their ballot to help in the "fight for justice and equality" for the black community after the death of unarmed black man George Floyd last month, which led to global protests.

Katy said: "I’m excited to be a part of this kick-off to ‘Democracy Summer 2020’ with so many amazing talents, activists and speakers.

"The young people of America are speaking loud and clear on the streets and online, and come November, it will be more important than ever to fight for justice and equality, and against systemic racism, with our ballots."

The live-stream will also feature appearances and performances from the likes of Chuck D, Big Freedia, Lucy Hale, Ne-Yo, Saweetie, Leslie Grace, Skylar Astin, Dove Cameron and Sofia Carson.

‘Men in Black II’ actress Rosario Dawson and ‘Dear White People’ star Logan Browning will co-host.

The event will also raise funds for various organisations and charities, including the National Action Network and the Community Justice Action Fund.

Katy isn’t the only pop star calling on US citizens who are old enough to vote to make their voices heard for the country’s upcoming presidential election, so they can elect people who will fight to end systemic racism.

In a series of tweets, Taylor Swift recently wrote: "Racial injustice has been ingrained deeply into local and state governments, and changes MUST be made there. In order for policies to change, we need to elect people who will fight against police brutality and racism of any kind. #BlackLivesMatter

"We need to fight for mail-in voting for the 2020 election. No one should have to choose between their health and having their voice heard. http://VOTE.ORG (sic)"
