Katie Melua to release this year’s Children in Need single

Katie Melua will release this year’s ‘Children in Need’ single.
The ‘Nine Million Bicycles’ hitmaker has agreed to record a special version of ‘Fields of Gold’, which was originally written and recorded by Sting in 1993, in memory of Sir Terry Wogan, who hosted the charity event for 35 years until 2015, because it was his favourite song because he died last year after a lengthy battle with cancer.
Katie said: "I am delighted to have accepted the invitation by BBC ‘Children in Need’ to record and release this single to support the charity’s 2017 Appeal, in honour of the late Sir Terry Wogan. He was a long-standing supporter of mine, and to re-record one of his favourite songs for a charity that was so dear to his heart is a privilege. I hope it goes on to make a real and lasting difference to the lives of disadvantaged children and young people across the UK."
Katie recorded the song at Hoxa Studios in West Hampstead and sees her playing solo acoustic guitar accompanied by bandmate Mark Edwards on hammond organ.
‘Fields of Gold’ is available as a stand-alone charity single from November 3 and will feature as a bonus track on Katie’s latest album ‘In Winter’ on November 10.
The 33-year-old singer will give the song its debut television performance live on the BBC ‘Children in Need Appeal Show’ on November 17 at 9.50pm on BBC One.
All profits from the single will go to the charity, with a minimum of 54p from each sale.
Katie joins a long list of stars – including Craig David, Jess Glynne, Gareth Malone’s All Star Choir, Ellie Goulding, and Girls Aloud – who have recorded a single for the charity.
