Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II was honoured with a gun salute to mark her 89th birthday yesterday (21.04.15).
The monarch – who also celebrated privately in Windsor Castle – was given a 41-gun royal salute by the King’s Troop Royal Horse Artillery in London’s Hyde Park after they paraded past Buckingham Palace.
A performance by the Band of the Royal Artillery followed the salute which used six 13-pounder World War One field guns.
Many more gun salutes took place around the country in honour of the queen and were scheduled over Edinburgh and Stirling Castles, Cardiff Castle, and Hillsborough Castle in County Down.
The Honourable Artillery Company also saluted the monarch in the capital and fired 62-guns from the bank of the River Thames just outside the iconic Tower of London, reports BBC News.
Meanwhile, Queen Elizabeth is still awaiting the birth of her fifth great grandchild, which will be the second of her grandson Prince William and his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge.
While bookies had slashed odds that the 33-year-old royal would give birth on the monarch’s birthday, the Duchess’ reported due date, Saturday April 25, is now the new favourite.
