Doctor Who episode to tackle racism

A new ‘Doctor Who’ episode is to tackle the issue of racism.
Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Time Lord will land in America’s Deep South on Sunday night’s (21.10.18) episode where she will go up against an evil alien who is disputing the real-life events in which civil rights campaigner Rosa Parks rejected a bus driver’s order to relinquish her seat in the "coloured section" to a white passenger in 1955.
She was arrested, but the incident, which took place in Alabama, sparked the beginning of the historical civil rights movement, a decades-long movement in which African Americans sought legal rights.
The episode will see the Time Lord try to ensure the incident is not sabotaged.
Elsewhere in the ep, the Doctor’s sidekicks Ryan Sinclair and Yasmin Khan are both discriminated against when they are refused entry to a motel.
According to the Daily Mirror newspaper, Ryan – who is portrayed by black actor Tosin Cole – says: "It’s not like Rosa Parks wipes out racism from the world forever.
"Otherwise how come I get stopped by police way more than my white mates? Tell me you don’t get it?"
Police officer Yasmin (Mandip Gill) says: "Of course I do, especially on the job. "I can be a police officer now because people like Rosa Parks fought for us."
She also predicts there will be a black president of the US in 2008 – which is the year Barack Obama took take charge of the White House, 53 years after Rosa’s arrest.
Yasmin says: "In 53 years they will have a black president. Who knows where they will be 50 years after that? That is proper change."
