Charli XCX: It’s wrong that women’s success is questioned

Charli XCX says it’s unfair that successful women are always accused of being bitches.
The 23-year-old singer is one of the busiest women in the music business and as well as writing her own hits and tracks for other artists, such as will.i.am and Pia Mia’s new single ‘Boys And Girls, she also runs her own label Vroom Vroom, has designed a clothing collection for Boohoo.com, voices a character in the upcoming ‘Angry Birds’ film and is an ambassador for Cartoon Network series ‘The Powerpuff Girls’.
But Charli insists there are always question marks against high achieving women and a presumption they must have a tough attitude to have got where they are.
In an interview with the Metro newspaper, she said: "When it comes to being a successful woman, there always seems to be a question. ‘Why are you successful? Is it because you’re a bitch?’ There always seems to be a negative connotation.
"There are only a few female execs at record companies. There are a lot of great female songwriters and producers, but they’re definitely a minority, especially on the business side."
Charli is one of the most outspoken and outrageous pop stars around and she doesn’t plan on changing because all the artists she loves had a rock ‘n’ roll attitude.
She explained: "I’ve never tried to be anything that I’m not and sometimes that gets me into trouble with things I say because I’m outspoken. I grew up wanting my rock stars and musicians to be rock stars and musicians, not super tame and vanilla. I like true artists and it’s sad that we’ve lost so many icons this year like Prince and Bowie, they were kick-a**."
