Bjork revives lost song to help fight salmon farming

Bjork has revived a lost song called ‘Oral’ to raise money for a legal fight against salmon farming.

The 57-year-old singer is backing a battle against Norwegian-owned commercial fish farming operations which have been affecting the ecosystem in her native Iceland and she hopes the track – which is a collaboration with fellow singer Rosalia – can help the cause and “give people a voice”.

She told Pitchfork.com: “I was not thinking about salmon then [when I wrote the song] … I like the fact that it’s happy. We are focusing on the solutions, to give people a voice. If we get more money than just for this court case, we are also going to go into all the legislation, and more into the infrastructure of Iceland’s legal system [about] how we can have strict regulations here.”

She added of the fight against the salmon farms: “We also understand that this is not a sprint, this is like a marathon. This might take five years, so who knows? One of the reasons why I picked this case is because it is still possible to stop the mutant Norwegian salmon. It is still possible to get our fjords back.”

Bjork went on to admit she’s never actually voted in an election, but she’s determined to have her say on issues close to her heart through her music.

She explained: “I do personal politics. I don’t do party politics. I’ve never voted for a party in my life. But I think this is a very important weapon, or tool, of the singer-songwriter …

“I’ve always picked maybe one battle a year, or every other year, that I can see I can win, and I can take it all the way till the end and actually change something.”

‘Oral’ is released on November 9.
