Annie Jones says the ‘timing wasn’t right’ for on-screen romance

Annie Jones thinks the "timing just wasn’t right" for Jane Harris and Des Clarke to enjoy a happily-ever-after ending in ‘Neighbours’.

The 53-year-old actress – who plays Jane Harris in the Australian soap – has revealed why she thinks the on-screen couple’s honeymoon period quickly evaporated following their wedding during the show’s 35th anniversary week.

Annie told RadioTimes.com: "I think they both tried very hard to make it their happy ending, but the timing just wasn’t right for them.

"They have decided they are perhaps better off being just good friends."

Jane actually ended their engagement in 1989, when she quit Erinsborough for England.

And despite her return to the soap, Annie thinks Jane is simply "very unlucky in love".

She continued: "After it’s established what’s happened with Des off screen and she’s back in Erinsborough, romantic ideas might be on the back-burner for the time being. Although she and Paul have history, so wait and see!"

Earlier this month, Annie admitted she used to feel "a bit sad" every time one of her ‘Neighbours’ stints ended.

The actress portrayed Jane from 1986 to 1989 on the soap and then returned for a number of cameos, but the star recently agreed a permanent return, and hopes she can "stay forever".

She said: "I always felt a bit sad after each stint finished as I had such a great time.

"Then they’d invite me back again and I’d have another wonderful couple of weeks, then be sad when it ended. So this time I thought, ‘Let’s stay forever.’"
