Amyl and The Sniffers foot $35,000 bar tab after Melbourne gig is axed by police

Amyl and The Sniffers footed a $35,000 bar tab after their Melbourne concert was axed.

The punk rockers were due to play a free hometown concert at Fed Square, but it was pulled by police due to safety concerns after a barrier broke.

To make it up to fans, Amy Taylor and co generously put $5,000 behind the bar at seven pubs across the Australian city.

The frontwoman said in a social media video: “Have a drink on us, in AC/DC fashion. Just have some fun tonight.”

The group later updated the post to read: “If [you’re] reading this, the bar tabs are long spent.”

Amyl and The Sniffers have been praised for helping to boost the local bar economy with the generous gift.

Benjamin “Rusty” Russell from The Curtin boozer in Melbourne told broadcaster ABC: “I was like … Jesus, that’s wild. Absolutely wild. We talk about Melbourne music community — well that is it. [The band] cut their teeth in places like this, so to see them give back like that is amazing.”

It’s a fitting offering as the band cut their teeth playing pubs in Melbourne.

Recently, the band headlined London’s Alexandra Palace.

Arriving in the British capital in celebration of the first anniversary of their latest album, Cartoon Darkness, the Aussie four-piece made light work of the 10,000-capacity venue in October.

They worked the room with ease as ferocious riffs and pounding drumbeats filled the cavernous space.

Next year, Amyl and The Sniffers will return to the British capital when Deftones headline All Points East presents Outbreak Fest 2026.
