Toho planning new Godzilla film

Toho is planning a new ‘Godzilla’ movie.

The Japanese production studio is set to make a reboot of the classic monster movie following the success of the latest Hollywood blockbuster of the same name by director Gareth Edwards.

The studio first introduced the giant reptilian creature in 1954 but agreed to leave their creation alone in 1995 to make way for a Roland Emmerich-directed Hollywood version.

They re-introduced Godzilla in the late ’90s before killing off the monster for the second time in 2004 ‘Final Wars’ 2004.

Toho are now set to revive their monster once again after seeing the latest Hollywood reboot – starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen and Bryan Cranston – earn around half a billion dollars worldwide this year, reports Empire Online.

Taichi Ueda, Toho’s producer, said: "The time has come for Japan to make a film that will not lose to Hollywood.

He added the company’s aim is to create the movie in time for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, to "represent Japan and be loved around the world".

Toho is yet to announce the production team but have put together a team of executives and directors to plan the next stages of the film which is set to start shooting next summer and is aiming for a 2016 release.

It will be the 29th time Toho have featured the monster in their films.

The company will also erect a statue of Godzilla in Shinjuku, Tokyo, in honour of the new movie in April.
