Allan Cubitt: Camera ‘lingered too intimately’ on murders

Allan Cubitt claims the camera "lingered too intimately" on murder scenes in the first series of ‘The Fall’.

The creator of the controversial TV thriller – which was accused of glamorising violence against women – has confessed director Jakob Verbruggen may have spent too much time depicting the killer’s brutal crimes.

He said: "It may be that the camera lingered too intimately on certain things…"

Allan has now taken over as director of the second series, which sees the return of ‘Fifty Shades of Grey’ actor Jamie Dornan as murderer Paul Spector and Gillian Anderson as Detective Superintendent Stella Gibson, and he’s admitted he would’ve made very different decisions had he been behind the camera for the first series.

He told Radio Times magazine: "There are many, many things that I would have done differently. I mean, I was very involved with the editing, but you work with the material you’ve got."

Series two of the BBC Two drama – which is set in Belfast, Northern Ireland – is set to air later this month and Gillian has defended it against criticism.

She explained of the way in which Paul’s character is seen laying out his victims: "From my perspective, he’s posing these women as if they are posing for him – in seduction.

"It’s not a fashion magazine shoot type thing. It is what turns him on."
