Prince Philip stops at roadside cafe

Britain’s Prince Philip stunned diners at a roadside cafe when he stopped off for a coffee.

The 93-year-old royal was heading to watch a carriage driving event in Lowther, Cumbria when he stopped off at the Little Chef on the A1 near Doncaster, South Yorks, last Thursday (07.08.14) morning but he didn’t tuck into any of their breakfast fare.

One onlooker told The Sun newspaper: "A convoy of posh cars suddenly swept in. It was extraordinary.

"There was massive security and everyone was wondering who on earth had turned up. Then we realised it was the duke.

"Some of his staff bought coffee but I don’t think Philip had anything to eat."

Among the items on Little Chef’s menu is a £10.99 royal breakfast, a meaty feast of steak, bacon, sausage, fried eggs, mushrooms, potatoes, tomato, beans and toast.

A spokesman for the chain said: "Next time he might go for that."

This week Philip will join his wife, Queen Elizabeth, in Scotland for their annual break at their Balmoral residence.

While Philip has been staying at their East Anglian estate Sandringham, the queen has been in Scotland for the past three weeks after travelling north of the border to open the Commonwealth Games.
