Broadchurch tops best drama moments poll

‘Broadchurch’ has topped a poll of the best drama moments.

Viewers have picked the shocking revelation of schoolboy Danny Latimer’s murderer as the best moment in an ITV drama, ahead of the death of fan favourite Matthew Crawley in ‘Downton Abbey’.

The ‘Broadchurch’ shocker, which occurred at the end of the BAFTA-winning drama’s first series in 2013, got 25 per cent of the vote from 2,000 pollsters. Meanwhile, 17 per cent thought the death of detective Hercule Poirot, played by David Suchet, in the final instalment of ‘Poirot’ was ITV’s best drama moment.

Matthew Crawley’s shock death in ‘Downton’ and the wedding of Doc Martin and Louisa Ellington in ‘Doc Martin’ tied for third place with 15 per cent of the vote.

‘Downton’ rounded out the poll as 13 per cent of viewers picked Lady Sybil Crawley’s death – which tied in fourth place with the opening of Selfridge’s department store in ‘Mr Selfridge’ – as their favourite moment. 11 per cent of voters, meanwhile, picked Lady Mary and Matthew Crawley’s kiss, which came fifth.

Meanwhile, the ITV period drama’s Dowager Countess of Grantham – played by Dame Maggie Smith – has been picked as the nation’s favourite ITV character.

The witty Crawley family matriarch – who topped the survey with 13 per cent of the vote – came ahead of Hercule Poirot (11%) and Doc Martin (9%).

The survey was commissioned by ITV to mark the launch of ITV Encore, a new channel dedicated to drama, available on Sky Channel 123.
