Metallica helped fund 9,000 meals for people experiencing homelessness in Cardiff with a £20,000 donation to a local foodbank as their M72 Tour stopped in the city on Sunday night (28.06.26).
Cardiff Foodbank thought they were being pranked when they were contacted by the heavy metal legends’ All Within My Hands foundation ahead of their Principality Stadium show.
Rachel Biggs, CEO of Cardiff Foodbank, told BBC Wales: “We had an email saying ‘This isn’t a scam, please get in touch with the foundation’.
“They said ‘We are going to donate £20,000 to you’.”
James Hetfield and co saved the day, as just a couple of weeks prior to the gig, the foodbank issued a desperate plea when supplies ran worryingly low.
Biggs added: “It’s an incredible amount of money which will make such a difference and replenish our empty shelves.”
She continued: “What’s great for us [is] it helps raise the profile and what Metallica are doing is mobilising their fans, mobilising the local community.”.
Taylor Swift donated to the same foodbank on her Eras Tour in 2024, but the charity noted that Metallica’s is the “largest celebrity donation” they’ve received.
Metallica – who have also teamed up with local services to encourage fans to give blood on the global jaunt – recently hit the headlines after guitarist Kirk Hammett wore a T‑shirt declaring “Taylor Swift is a CIA Psyop”.
When they headlined Budapest’s Puskás Aréna on June 13, he caused a stir by donning the offending Taylor top.
Days later, during the band’s performance of Seek and Destroy in Dublin, Kirk took a tumble, with many Taylor fans joking that it was karma.
The rocker laughed it off by captioning a clip of his fall on Instagram Stories: “Slip and Destroy.”
