The Fear: Lily Allen was ‘terrified’ about the reaction to her ‘rage’ record West End Girl

Lily Allen has admitted she was “terrified” about how fans would react to her “rage” record West End Girl.

The 40-year-old singer opened up about the 2025 record in a new interview with ELLE UK, revealing that she spent months bracing herself for the response.

She told the magazine: “When I wrote this album, I spent about eight months being absolutely terrified of what was gonna come back at me.”

The material was penned during a time of emotional upheaval – including the breakdown of her marriage to Stranger Things star David Harbour, 50.

She explained: “I was processing things that were happening at quite a traumatic period of time. I don’t think that it’s a particularly self‑aware record. It’s a really angry record. And it’s a lot more about rage directed towards other people. It’s not really about self‑reflection.”

Despite the intensity of the themes, including infidelity, she said the process taught her something important about herself.

She reflected: “I think that if I’ve learnt anything about myself from it, it’s that rage is powerful and necessary, and it’s not necessarily a bad thing to express. In fact, repressed rage is arguably more damaging.”

The Fear singer quipped of the warm reception to the songs: “I don’t know if it’s great for the soul, but it’s good for the ego.”

The pop star added that she’s been struck by how deeply listeners connect with her music, often sharing personal experiences with her online.

Allen said: “In my Instagram DMs, I get loads of women telling me really graphic stuff. All I can do is write some music that hopefully they identify with and makes them feel less alone.”

The Smile hitmaker also teased what fans can expect from her upcoming live shows, hinting at a more theatrical, stripped‑back production.

Allen said the performances will “feel more like a Broadway‑esque one‑woman show, with really interesting set design. There’ll be no band and no dancers.”

The March issue of ELLE UK is on sale from February 5. The full interview is available at elle.com/uk/lily-allen.
