Manchester United legend Gary Neville becomes The Reytons’ bassist for the night

Manchester United legend Gary Neville sent gig-goers into a frenzy when he became The Reytons’ bassist for the night.

The indie rockers were joined by the former footballer-turned-pundit during ‘Low Life’ at their concert at Manchester’s Aviva Studios on Saturday night (08.03.25).

After wowing the crowd, frontman Jonny Yerrell thanked and praised Neville.

The singer gushed: “He is honestly one of the most down-to-earth and nicest people we’ve ever had the pleasure of working with.”

It was speculated that the 50-year-old retired footy ace – who was a right-back for Manchester United and served as club captain for five years – would step in for the group’s bass player Lee Holland at some point after Neville appeared in a tongue-in-cheek audition tape to be a stand-in to promote their tour in September after he suffered an injury.

In the clip, Neville said: “If Lee can play for The Reytons, then so can I.”

He was then asked to show off his dancing skills and the length of time it takes him to down a pint of beer, as well as taking part in a round of Higher or Lower and a blindfolded taste test.

Yerrell was impressed, telling Neville: “You’ve literally ticked every box there pal. But I think the only question is now, you know, what’re you actually like on bass?”

To which, he responded: “I’ve never played bass in my life.”

Prompting Yerrell to declare: “You’re in.”

Despite having no label backing, the Rotheram-based quartet scored a number one album with 2023’s ‘What’s Rock and Roll?’ and swiftly sold out shows on their tour, including at the O2 Academy Brixton in London.

Following the UK leg, The Reytons will embark on a European run later this month, before headlining Tramlines Festival in July.

A press release teased: “Will Gary be joining them? Who knows…”
