Girls Aloud felt they had ‘nothing to lose’ in 2004

Girls Aloud felt like they had “nothing to lose” when they released ‘What Will the Neighbours Say?’.

The chart-topping girl group released the hit album in 2004, and Nadine Coyle admits that it was a turning point for the band.

The 38-year-old pop star told The Independent: “It was a time of such innocence. It could have gone great, and it could have gone horribly wrong.

“We had nothing to lose and everything to gain. We were just kids singing songs.”

The group – which also consisted of Cheryl, Nicola Roberts, Kimberley Walsh and the late Sarah Harding – were formed on the TV talent show ‘Popstars: The Rivals’ in 2002.

And Nicola, 38, still has fond memories of their early days in the music business.

She shared: “I look back on it really fondly.

“I can see and feel the vulnerabilities and how naive and fresh out the gate we were, not really knowing what we were doing.”

Meanwhile, earlier this month, Girls Aloud shared three previously unreleased songs.

The group reissued ‘What Will The Neighbours Say?’, and included the unheard tracks ‘Disco Bunny’, ‘Baby When You Go’ and their cover of Chris Isaak’s 1991 classic ‘Wicked Game’.

The songs feature vocals from Sarah – who died of cancer in 2021, aged 39 – and Cheryl previously revealed that she wants to celebrate what the band achieved together.

The 40-year-old pop star – who has also enjoyed success as a solo artist – recently told the BBC: “Making new music without Sarah would be odd. But celebrating what we made together? Fabulous.”
