BBC unveils Newsround plans and CBBC commissions

BBC has unveiled plans for its new ‘Newsround’ format.

The broadcaster is introducing new, longer CBBC and BBC iPlayer bulletins every morning, while the website will offer more in-depth stories and features.

Paul Plunkett – the editor of ‘Newsround’ – said: "We are so excited to be relaunching ‘Newsround’… with more online content, a longer bulletin and a YouTube channel that we know our audience will love.

"Our ‘Newsround’ team are passionate about reporting age-appropriate news stories across all our platforms that speak to the lives of today’s children.

"These changes reflect the changing media habits of our audience and ensures ‘Newsround’ will remain relevant for generations to come."

The new YouTube channel will bring young viewers the best of the programme’s content from around the world.

The Beeb has confirmed the videos on the platform will be curated from the ‘Newsround’ website and bulletins throughout the week.

As well as highlighting important issues, the service will also aim to provide an outlet for children’s points of view.

A full-time environmental correspondent is also joining the team to help inform and educate the young audience.

Meanwhile, CBBC has commissioned a number of ‘Newsround Specials’, which will be a collaboration between ‘Newsround’ and Children’s In House Productions.

‘Growing Up Black In The UK’ – made up of two 20 minute episodes – will look at three children reflecting the diversity of the Black British experience.

The three kids will combine their passions and opinions as they craft a manifesto for change.

And early next year, the team will be asking ‘Why Don’t We Talk About Periods?’, in a new programme aimed at addressing the issues around period poverty and campaigners looking to bust period myths while normalising conversations around menstruation.
