Jed Mercurio had ‘no idea’ whether Line of Duty would succeed

Jed Mercurio had "no idea" whether ‘Line of Duty’ would be a success when the show first launched.

The creator of the BBC drama series has admitted to harbouring doubts about the programme when it first aired, but he’s also thanked fans for their support over the years.

Jed wrote on Twitter: "When we finished filming #LineofDuty in 2011, none of us had any idea if the show would be a hit. We’re all immensely grateful to our amazing fans who not only gave us the chance to make more seasons but also the gift of being able to work together again. (sic)"

The first season of the police drama recently aired on BBC One, and Jed has enjoyed the experience of reminiscing about the series.

He wrote on the micro-blogging platform: "Thanks to everyone who watched #LineofDuty Series 1 @BBCOne and made us number one again @BBCiPlayer . It was such a pleasure seeing the cast in supporting roles who made big comebacks in later series. (sic)"

The BBC began airing reruns of the popular police drama when it was announced that the sixth series would be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

However, Martin Compston recently hinted at an exciting twist in the script.

He said: "For this year, I think we’ve filmed [episodes] one and two, and as a cast, we’ve got [the scripts for] three and four, and Jed [Mercurio] is writing five and six and we haven’t seen them, and there’s a bombshell at the end of four and I’m desperate to find out what happens."

Despite this, Martin and the rest of the cast are still clueless about the show’s biggest mystery of the organised crime group and the hidden identity of the villainous H.

He confessed: "We’re just the same as everybody else and as far as H goes, as soon as we find him we’re out a job."
