Laura Whitmore: ‘Love Island inundated with overwhelming amount of applications’

Laura Whitmore says ‘Love Island’ has been inundated with applications for its new season.

After the summer 2020 and winter 2021 series’ of the show were axed, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, host Laura, 35, insisted that the ITV2 programme will "come back bigger and better than ever".

Speaking to Christine Lampard on ‘Lorraine’, Laura said: "It will come back bigger and better than ever. I have been told there has been an overwhelming amount of applications for next year.

"I just think that show is such a great and such a big show but it has to be done in the right way. When it comes back it will come back the right way."

‘Love Island’s summer series was axed after Kevin Lygo, ITV’s director of television, previously conceded it simply wasn’t possible to shoot the show in the midst of the global health crisis.

Speaking earlier this year, he explained: "We have tried every which way to make ‘Love Island’ this summer but logistically it’s just not possible to produce it in a way that safeguards the wellbeing of everyone involved and that for us is the priority.

"In normal circumstances we would be preparing very soon to travel out to the location in Mallorca to get the villa ready but clearly that’s now out of the question.

"We are very sorry for fans of the show but making it safely is our prime concern and ‘Love Island’ will be back stronger than ever in 2021."

The winter 2021 edition of the show has also been axed but ITV promised: "’Love Island UK’ will return bigger and better than ever with an extended run in summer 2021."
