Griff Rhys Jones says TV bosses are ‘morons’

Griff Rhys Jones has claimed the people who run the TV industry "don’t have two brains to put together".

The 66-year-old comedian has revealed he’s had projects rejected by television bosses in the past, and he insisted most people at the top of the industry are "morons".

Speaking about one of his doomed projects, Griff told the ‘My Time Capsule’ podcast: "I tried to sell it to the morons at television.

"Let’s not beat around the bush. The people who run television at the moment, for the most part, don’t have two brains to put together.

"They’re all looking over their shoulders worried about who’s in charge, of what people will say, whether this is identical to something that’s been made."

Griff previously suggested he prefers performing live because TV bosses are too controlling.

The veteran comedian explained that "commissioners are interfering in every single thing that happens".

Griff – who has starred in a number of TV series with his comedy partner, Mel Smith – said: "When you’ve worked in television for so long, you get slightly fed up with producers saying, ‘You have to talk about this.’

"In TV, agendas are being decided and commissioners are interfering in every single thing that happens.

"By contrast, live performing is great – it’s raw. I can get up, and if I’m in the middle of it and want to start to talking about something completely different, I can. I absolutely love that.

"It’s a little bit of a shock I think for friends who come to the theatre to see me standing on stage just talking about anything that comes into my head. But it’s really fun to do. Audiences seem to enjoy it a lot."
