Dame Barbara Winsdor apologises to husband for Alzheimer’s

Dame Barbara Windsor apologises to her husband for having Alzheimer’s.
The 81-year-old actress is currently battling the form of dementia, and her husband Scott Mitchell says she apologises to him every night for the illness, which leaves him needing to take care of her.
He said: "She keeps apologising to me for the fact that she’s not well. So she is very aware which is why I am very sensitive about conversations. Literally every night she will say to me, ‘I’m so sorry about this.’ And she thanks me for looking after her. I say to her, ‘You don’t have to thank me.’"
Scott, 56, says the screen legend – who is best known for playing Peggy Mitchell in the BBC soap ‘EastEnders’ – can’t be "left alone any more", but insists the couple still have plenty of "funny moments" together where they "laugh".
He added: "Barbara can’t be left alone any more. That’s the reality of it. She has to have constant care.
"She can’t look after herself but then we still sit and have dinner and watch TV and have normal conversations.
"There are also some funny moments where we laugh.
"The sweet side of Barbara has come out in actual fact. So far she hasn’t had that aggression that I know some people do get. That is part of it, that may come, I don’t know. But at the moment she is very sensitive to others."
And Scott says he’s not considering moving Barbara into a care home, as they’re just taking things "day by day".
Speaking to the Sunday Mirror newspaper, he said: We just take things day by day. I haven’t spoken to Barbara – about the end of her life.
"There is a lot of Barbara that is still very much present, and I think you have to be very sensitive when you talk to people who are actually living with the illness. There is a sensitivity. You talk about certain things, you talk about the reality of a lot of things.
"But I think one has to be careful about not traumatising or suddenly causing thoughts that may not be there at the moment."
