Nic Cester: Jet split because we were a rock ‘n’ roll cliché

Nic Cester says Jet imploded because the band became a "cliché" of themselves.
The ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ rockers reunited in 2017 after five years apart to support Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band on their summer tour and they followed that up with a 15th anniversary tour of their debut album ‘Get Born’ in 2018.
Nic admits the concerts were a very therapeutic experience for him and the rest of the band – lead guitarist Cameron Muncey, bassist Mark Wilson and drummer Chris Cester, who is also the singer’s brother – because Jet ended in 2012 in a sea of bitterness and alcohol of drugs as they fell into all the rock ‘n’ roll pitfalls.
The songwriter told BANG Showbiz: "I think the problems in Jet were the combination of a few things. The relationships between us were all awful, we were all tired, and we were drinking too much and taking a lot of drugs and making bad choices. We went through all the clichés. We very much became a cliché of ourselves in the end, I guess that’s why for me the answer was to completely walk away and rebuild from the ground up."
The 39-year-old musician thinks the problems arose because they got too big too soon and weren’t prepared for that level of success and everything that goes with it when you’re constantly touring.
He added: "The success we had was enormous and very rapid and I don’t think anyone of us were really prepared and we did a lot of stupid things and made a lot of stupid mistakes. That environment just became quite toxic for me, and I felt like I couldn’t perform in that band anymore."
Nic recently released his solo album ‘Sugar Rush’, his first new music since Jet’s final LP ‘Shaka Rock’, which came out in 2009.
He has just unveiled the video for his latest single ‘Hard Times’ and has announced he is going to playing a London gig at The Curtain in London on October 26.
