Sam Smith hadn’t heard of Disclosure before Latch

Sam Smith had never heard of Disclosure before he collaborated with them on ‘Latch’.
The 2012 track was one of the first songs the ‘Stay With Me’ hitmaker worked with other people on, but he has admitted to having never listened to dance music or the EDM duo – comprised of brothers Howard and Guy Lawrence – until he was invited to their studio with his renowned producer Jimmy Napes.
Speaking to Amazon Music Unlimited as part of their Side by Side playlist series, Sam confessed: "I’d never heard of Disclosure. I’d actually never really listened to dance music before I met them.
"Me and producer Jimmy [Napes] went to their studio in the countryside. It was this tiny tiny studio and we all sat in there and they started playing a beat. I just didn’t know what to think.
"I was used to listening to jazz music, musical theatre and Britney Spears.
"So when they started playing this beat I really didn’t know what to think.
"In my head I just thought I need to sing has hard as I possibly can."
The 24-year-old pop star – who recently returned with his chart-topping second studio album ‘The Thrill Of It All’ – previously admitted he had a "panic" about the musical direction he should take on his first record, 2014’s ‘In The Lonely Hour’, due to the popularity of ‘Latch’.
He said previously: "As soon as ‘Latch’ had a lot of success in the UK, my label and me had a little bit of a panic.
"We were like, ‘Maybe we should be doing dance?’ And that’s what I can hear on [my first] album — there’s two or three songs where I can hear the little wobble, but the rest of the album is what I set out to make from the beginning.
"But I still love my album, but I’m loving my new one more."
However, without working with Disclosure, he might not have teamed up with producer Naughty Boy a year later on ‘La La La’, which reached number one in 26 countries.
