Miguel: Prince’s death was a reminder to make your mark

Miguel says Prince’s death reminded musicians how important it is to make their own mark.
The 31-year-old singer is often compared to the late music legend – who passed away in April 2016 at the age of 57 – but says if there is one thing Prince’s legacy has left behind, is the importance of standing out from the crowd and doing things your own way.
Speaking to the latest issue of Something About magazine, Miguel – who releases new LP ‘War & Leisure’ on December 1 – said of the ‘Purple Rain’ hitmaker’s legacy: "I think his death had an impact on everything – songwriting, the culture of music, the responsibility that we have to realise that our heroes made their mark.
"I mean that in every sense of the term ‘heroes’ – all of the thinkers, all of the great musicians, poets, scientists, politicians … Their moment came and it’s our time now, for all of us … He sets the bar for what an artist – the ultimate artist – really can be and, if anything, death is a reminder to keep writing your own story and paving your own path, as corny as that sounds."
The ‘Coffee’ hitmaker recently admitted that although it’s a "huge compliment" to be likened to the ‘Kiss’ singer, he doesn’t want to simply be a "reminder" of the music icon.
He said: "I think it’s obvious he’s a major influence but I think there’s also things about me that are uniquely mine that aren’t coming from his vibe. Being a reminder of Prince is a huge compliment. But no one will ever be that I don’t want to be that. It’s a bit of both, being flattered but like, ‘Hey, there’s more.’ Hopefully that’s enough to get you to listen more and go, ‘OK I see where he’s different.’"
‘Something About’ will be stocked internationally from November 24.
