Janis Joplin accidentally died of a heroin overdose at the fateful age of 27.
The singer was one of the biggest female rock stars of her era and after releasing three albums, she died on an accidental heroin overdose in 1970.
A fourth album ‘Pearl’ was released in January 1971, just three months after her death and it reached number one on the charts.
Throughout her career, the singer’s drug use increased and she acquired a reputation as a "speed freak" and occasional heroin user.
She also used other psychoactive drugs and was a heavy drinker throughout her career; her favourite alcoholic beverage was Southern Comfort.
