Call the Midwife fans say goodbye to Jenny Lee

‘Call the Midwife’ said goodbye to central character Jenny Lee last night (09.03.14).

The main protagonist, played by Jessica Raine, was written out of the hit BBC One period drama in the third series finale as she left Nonnatus House to become a nurse at a Marie Curie cancer hospital after her interest in midwifery waned.

Jenny was also seen meeting a new suitor, her future husband Phillip Worth, played by Stephen Ashfield.

Vanessa Redgrave, who narrates the series as the mature Jenny, is expected to stay with the show, however. According to Digital Spy, it is explained Jenny stays in touch with her former colleagues at Nonnatus House and continues to share their childbirth tales with the world.

Jessica sensationally quit the hit drama after three years in order to pursue a career in Hollywood.

The actress has had roles in movies such as ‘The Woman in Black’ and recently appeared in BBC Two’s ‘Line of Duty’.

She is next set to be seen in lavish Sky Atlantic drama ‘Fortitude’, which will feature a host of stars including Stanley Tucci, Christopher Eccleston and Sir Michael Gambon.

The BBC has already commissioned a fourth series of ‘Call the Midwife’ for 2015, in addition to a Christmas special to air in December.
