Prince William welcomed to Japan

Britain’s Prince William was welcomed to Japan with a ceremonial shower of water.

The 32-year-old royal touched down in the capital city of Tokyo yesterday (26.02.15) and was presented with a display put on by five boats who sprayed water in the colours of the Olympics into the Tokyo Bay, People magazine reports.

The Duke of Cambridge was greeted by hundreds of well-wishers including schoolchildren when he arrived at the city’s airport earlier in the afternoon.

He then met with Tokyo’s governor Yoichi Masuzoe, who escorted him across Tokyo Bay in a speedboat to show off the display ahead of their hosting of the 2020 Olympics.

Later in the day William – who is travelling without his wife, the Duchess of Cambridge and their 19-month-old son Prince George – visited the Hama-rikyu Gardens to enjoy afternoon green tea served by a renowned Japanese tea master.

The traditional ceremony, which can last up to four hours, is considered a great honour to bestow upon guests.

The second in line to the British throne will visit disaster sites in north-eastern Japan before departing for China on Sunday, just two weeks before the fourth anniversary of the devastating 2011 earthquake and tsunami.

He will also meet with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko and take a production tour of one of Japan’s most popular and long-standing dramas, and wear traditional yukata attire to dine with the Japanese prime minister.
