Country Joe McDonald, the Woodstock firebrand whose voice became synonymous with the anti‑Vietnam War movement, has died at the age of 84.
The hippie singer-songwriter, best known for leading Country Joe and the Fish and for electrifying the 1969 Woodstock crowd with his infamous I‑Feel‑Like‑I’m‑Fixin’‑to‑Die Rag anthem, passed away on Saturday (07.03.26) in Berkeley, California, from complications of Parkinson’s disease, his wife Kathy confirmed.
His band announced the news in a statement expressing their heartbreak, noting he was surrounded by family at the time of his death and asking fans to share memories while the family grieves privately.
A statement read: “McDonald was widely recognized as one of the defining voices of the 1960s counterculture movement.
“His music blended folk, rock and political commentary, capturing the spirit of a generation deeply affected by social upheaval, civil rights struggles and the Vietnam War.”
Born Joseph Allen McDonald, he co‑founded Country Joe and the Fish in 1965 with guitarist Barry “The Fish” Melton. The San Francisco group became a defining voice of the psychedelic era, releasing politically charged songs such as Superbird and An Untitled Protest, and early EP Talking Issue No. 1: Songs of Opposition. McDonald also penned Janis, a tribute to his former partner Janis Joplin.
McDonald’s infamous Woodstock moment — the solo performance where he fired up the crowd with the notorious “Fish Cheer,” kicking off a call‑and‑response that began with “Gimme an F” — became one of the defining acts of sixties rebellion and cemented him as a counterculture lightning rod.
The shockwaves from that moment followed him far beyond the festival fields. In 1968, The Ed Sullivan Show abruptly cancelled a planned appearance by Country Joe and the Fish after learning the band had updated their opening cheer to the expletive‑laced version. Not long after Woodstock, McDonald was arrested and fined for using the same cheer during a performance in Worcester, Massachusetts — a clash with authorities that added strain to the band and helped speed up their eventual split.
McDonald didn’t back down even then. In a moment that summed up his defiant streak, he performed the song in court, turning a legal proceeding into yet another stage for protest.
His career stretched across more than 50 years, during which he recorded at least 40 solo albums and remained deeply involved in activism, particularly supporting Vietnam War veterans.
McDonald is survived by his wife and five children.
