US Bodyguard fans left baffled by ‘mom’ references

American fans of ‘Bodyguard’ have been left baffled by the show – mistaking Keeley Hawes’ character for the mum of Richard Madden’s alter-ego.
Some Stateside viewers of the hit BBC One drama have been left confused after Richard’s character, personal protection officer David Budd, called Keeley’s alter-ego, Home Secretary Julia Montague – who he gets jiggy with in the programme – "ma’am", but they thought he was saying "mom".
One wrote: "The whole time I’ve been thinking David Budd in The Bodyguard has been saying "Mom" but it’s "Ma’am" . Thank god (sic)"
Another posted: "Took me 15 minutes to figure out it wasn’t his mom. All in all a good show so far though. Bodyguard-Netflix-check it out (sic)"
One shared: "I can’t tell if he is saying mom or ma’am to this lady (sic)"
And another Twitter user wrote: "started watching Bodyguard on Netflix and did not understand why the characters were calling prominent women "Mom"… turns out they’re saying "ma’am," so… (sic)"
Some figured out the difference between "ma’am" and "mom", but were still baffled.
One posted: "What’s with this marm thing? I noticed the same thing in James Bond. I get it’s supposed to mean ma’am but it sounds like they’re calling their female superior mom (sic)"
The BBC show aired in the UK earlier this year, where it was a huge hit, and is now being shown on Netflix.
Creator Jed Mercurio recently hinted the programme could get another three series.
He said: "We have been very fortunate with the success of series one.
"It’s probably fair to say we would probably approach any thoughts of a second series with the idea that it would create an opportunity for a third or fourth.
"We do feel very privileged and fortunate that there’s been such a response that it gives us that opportunity to at least think about doing more."
