Stephen Mangan is set to lead the cast in 'Houdini and Doyle'.
The 47-year-old actor will be playing Sherlock creator Arthur Conan Doyle alongside American actor Michael Weston, who will portray escape artist Harry Houdini in the new ITV drama, described as a story of "real-life friends, real-life adversaries and real-life crime solvers".
Executive producer David Shore said: 'I've long been intrigued by both Houdini and Doyle, men who were ahead of their time, each fascinating in their own right. But the idea that these two, seemingly so different, could have been friends is almost too perfect.
"In Michael and Stephen, we have found two incredible actors that embody the intelligence, humour and mystique of these men, who even when viewed through the lens of history, are larger than life."
'Houdini and Doyle' will see the two famous creatives work together with New Scotland Yard on "some unsolved and inexplicable crimes".
An ITV spokesperson said: "'Houdini and Doyle' will draw heavily on the rich history of the period.
"At the turn of the 20th century the Metropolitan Police, mired in the ways of the 19th century, were overwhelmed with bizarre and often inexplicable cases so they turned to outsiders including Houdini and Doyle, who collaborated with New Scotland Yard on some unsolved and inexplicable crimes."
'Houdini and Doyle' will air on ITV Encore in 2016.

Perez Hilton claims he tried to quit 'Celebrity Big Brother' four times.
The gossip blogger eventually shared sixth place in the last series of the show with Kavana but admits he only made it through to the final day after producers did their best to stop him walking out.
He said: "The fourth time I tried to quit, I quit. I talked to the therapist, I talked to the director of the show, they kept bringing in more people. I talked to the therapist, the director, the head of talent and the head of Endemol UK."
On day 19, Perez was given a secret task to stage a fake walk-out and then spent two days observing house housemates.
And the 37-year-old star has now claimed the challenge was engineered just to give him much-needed breathing space and he found his stint in the secret room to be just the "vacation" he needed to carry on with the rest of the series.
Speaking to Sirius XM DJ Howard Stern, he said: "They were like, 'Alright, if you don't quit, we'll let you take a break. We'll put you in a separate room inside the house and let you watch everything that's happening and let you control the house'.
"There was no secret ahead of time. The secret challenge came after I quit the show. They were like, 'Alright, if you come back, we'll let you take a break from these nutjobs and then we'll reintroduce you to the house'.
"By that point, I was like, being by myself for two and a half days, it didn't seem like torture [in the secret room].
"It was a vacation. Because by myself, I was safe. I was happy. It was the best thing that happened to me."
The show was eventually won by Katie Price, with Perez's nemesis Katie Hopkins in second place.

Gemma Collins wants to star on 'Celebrity Big Brother'.
The 34-year-old TV personality - who's reported to have been banned from filming 'The Only Way Is Essex' following an on-set bust-up - has revealed she's eager to appear on the reality show, despite having declined an invitation in the past.
An insider told The Sun newspaper: "Gemma has previously been quite vocal about how she turned down 'CBB' to stay on 'Towie'.
"But that was before she was suspended from the show and now everything has changed.
"She is looking at 'CBB' as a way back to telly as well as showing 'Towie' bosses just what they are missing.
"But it all comes down to money."
Earlier this month, Gemma revealed she's inundated with offers all of the time, but has had to decline them because of her commitment to 'Towie'.
She shared: "People offer me things all the time but I just can't seem to leave Towie.
"And I mean massive things - I was meant to be going on 'Celebrity Big Brother' but I turned it down because I only do things if my heart is in it."

Scott Mills is "too nice" to be a judge on 'The X Factor'.
The BBC Radio 1 DJ believes he would be no good appearing on the singing contest's judging panel because he wouldn't be able to cope with rejecting contestants who aren't good enough.
When asked if he's considered taking on such a role, he exclusively told BANG Showbiz: "No. I think I'm too nice to be a judge. I don't think I'm great at giving criticism because I hate confrontation."
The former 'Strictly Come Dancing' contestant recalled one particularly embarrassing moment when he appeared on spin-off show 'The Xtra Factor' and offered some "honest" comments about some contestants, unaware he was to be introduced to them just seconds later.
He explained: "I remember being on 'Xtra Factor' a few years ago and I was quite honest about some of the acts and then they were like, 'And here they are!' And it was literally awful. Why didn't they tell me they were literally through a partition? And they were all watching, so that was super awkward. It's not for me."
But while the 41-year-old broadcaster admitted he hasn't got much faith in his own ability, he is confident his fellow BBC Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw will "bring something fresh" to 'The X Factor' when he joins the judging panel later this year.
Speaking at Kylie Minogue's headline concert at Barclaycard British Summertime in London's Hyde Park, he said: "It's a fun show to do. I think Grimmy will be great at it as well. I think because he'll be honest and bring something fresh to it which I think it needs."

Michelle Heaton insists being a celebrity is "tough".
The Liberty X singer - who will appear on reality show 'Seven Days With...' alongside her personal trainer husband Hugh Hanley - thinks the documentary will "surprise" people who thinks she has an easy life.
Michelle - who has kids Faith, three, and 16-month-old AJ with Hugh - said: "We're fortunate that Hugh's got a great job, but I still need to work to sustain a career in the media.
"To keep myself relevant, I have to attend lots of events, which are unpaid.
"It's tough and I think that's what's going to surprise people - it's not handed to us on a plate.
"We have the same problems other families have - there's no easy way through it.
"But I know I'm lucky to have some great opportunities."
And the couple admit the attention that comes with Michelle's work can be "tough" on their relationship.
Michele said: "I'm not private because of the job I do, but my family is.
"Having all that pressure on a relationship is tough but, thankfully, Hugh has a job outside of the showbiz industry so I get the best of both worlds."
Hugh added to Closer magazine: "We had to let cameras in our house to film for 'Seven Days With...' and that was a tough experience because I felt so exposed. It wasn't the easiest week."

Aisleyne Horgan-Wallace has confirmed she is returning to 'Big Brother'.
The 36-year-old glamour model, who first appeared on the reality TV show in 2006, will re-enter the house during the current series' upcoming Time Warp Twist tomorrow night (25.06.15).
Speaking about her decision to appear on the show again, the blonde beauty said: "I feel completely honoured. I feel the house is surrounded with a lot of negativity and there is a dark cloud over the house. I want to go in and bring positivity and fun. I feel like it's my house and I want to bring it back to life."
But Aisleyne is already planning to avoid interacting with some of the other contestants, including Helen Wood.
She said: "I won't be approaching Helen as she intimidates me but if I see her targeting someone else I definitely won't hold back and I will be telling her to know herself.
"I like to call her the spawn of Satan; she is just a b***h and is horrible to everyone."
Helen, 28, recently claimed she would spit in Aisleyne's face if she ever re-entered the house after being shown images of previous contestants.
But Aisleyne, who says she is celibate at the moment but looking for romance, is hoping to "inject some fun" into the current series.
She said: "I wanted to go back as it was such a great experience and I can see it is really negative in there at the moment so I want to inject some fun. I want to make them play games, have a drink and kiss each other.
"I want to just enjoy it and have as much fun as possible. I want it to be a really positive experience for everyone."

Brian Belo escaped from the 'Big Brother' house after climbing over the garden wall.
It was announced that the 27-year-old star had decided to leave the house earlier today (24.06.15) and it's now been revealed that rather than exiting through the Diary Room, he went through with an elaborate escape plan after being tormented by fellow housemates Helen Wood and Marc O'Neill.
Speaking in the Diary Room before he left the house, Brian confessed: "I feel like I'm being ganged up on. I don't want to cry. I've tried to keep away from there. I shouldn't have come back here. This is really hard. I feel like I'm living in hell. I'm defeated. I'm getting a barrage of abuse."
Brian - who won the 2007 series of the reality show - returned to the house along with fellow "legendary" housemates Nikki Grahame and Helen last week as part of the current 'Timebomb' series' Time Warp twist.
However, he's admitted that it was a mistake to try and relive his past experience, telling Nikki that he feels "degraded" by the way in which he's been treated.
Speaking to Brian before his departure, Nikki - who appeared on the 2006 series of the show - said: "She's [Helen] just jealous of you because you're so loved and you're such a good person. You've kept your dignity, Brian. She's shown herself in her true colours for the vile piece of s**t that she is. He's [Marc] just as low down as she is. She's got the morals of an alley cat."
However, Nikki's words of wisdom didn't stop Brian from putting his escape plan in to action as when his fellow housemates left the garden he climbed out of the top of the sky room as Helen looked on in astonishment shouting, "It's attention".
An emotional Nikki then broke down in the Diary Room, saying: "I just need to know that Brian's okay. Tell him that I love him so much and I'm here for him ... It would break my heart that those evil bullies drove him out of this house. I feel weak here without Brian. I hope I can muster up the strength to get through the next two days. I didn't want to let them ruin this for me ... I know more than anything Helen wants me to go. I don't want to give her the satisfaction of leaving. I want to stay her to the last minute to try to get under her skin."
Brian has since taken to Twitter, writing: "Take it to the wall #free #bbuk (sic)."
'Big Brother' continues tonight (24.06.15) at 10pm on Channel 5.

Antony Cotton believes the reason he's kept his job on 'Coronation Street' after 13 years is due to his off-screen persona rather than his onscreen character Sean Tully.
The 39-year-old actor insisted the producers have kept him and fellow castmates Jennie McAlpine and Malcolm Hebden - who play Fiz and Norris respectively - on for so many years is because they have "different roles to play" off-screen in the green room.
Antony said: "The people that are left, like me, like Jenny McAlpine, Malcolm Hebden, that have been there a long time. Within the show, we all play a part, but then privately outside the show, in the green room, we all play other parts. There's someone you can always get advice from, someone else you know you can always borrow a tenner from.
"The reason I've been on the show for so long is because of the role I play within the unit, as well as playing Sean on the show."
Antony went on to insist he's not taking part in this year's series of 'Strictly Come Dancing', despite it being one of his "favourite television shows", as his "loyalties lie at 'Coronation Street' ".
Speaking on ITV's 'Lorraine', Antony said: I just signed for 'Coronation Street' for another 12 months, which takes me to August next year, so I can't do both ('Strictly' and 'Corrie'). You've got to dedicate your life to ('Strictly'). It is one of my favourite television shows, and I would bite their hand off, but my loyalties lie at 'Coronation Street'."
