Tom Hardy has been cast in ‘True American’.
The actor will star in the crime drama directed by ‘The Hurt Locker’ Oscar-winner Kathryn Bigelow, The Wrap reports.
The rights to the film were acquired by Megan Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures, who outbid several other production companies for the A-list package deal of Hardy and Bigelow.
Apparently, Warner Bros. made an offer on behalf of Eric Roth, while Scott Stuber wanted it for Fox for Scott Cooper.
Imagine also chased the project for Universal and New Regency sought it for Darren Aronofsky.
The film is an adaptation of Anand Giridharadas’ non-fiction book ‘The True American: Murder and Mercy in Texas’.
It tells the story of the shattered lives of two very different men; Bangladesh Air Force officer Raisuddin Bhuiyan, and self-proclaimed "American terrorist", Mark Stroman, who shoots in a bid for revenge in the wake of 9/11.
Ten years after the incident, Bhuiyan decides to forgive jailed Stroman and starts a campaign to have his attacker spared of the death penalty.
Bigelow hasn’t been attached to a project since ‘Zero Dark Thirty’, but Hardy has an extremely bust year ahead.
He is due to star in Doug Liman’s ‘Splinter Cell’ and Michael Gracey’s Elton John biopic ‘Rocketman’, as well as Brian Helgeland’s ‘Legend’.
