Tom Chaplin’s solo LP saved his marriage and career

Tom Chaplin says making his solo album prevented him from losing his wife and daughter following years of alcohol abuse.
The former Keane singer – who has two-year-old daughter Freya with his wife Natalie – no longer has the urge to take drugs and hit the bottle because creating his debut solo LP ‘The Wave’ allowed him to address unresolved issues he had when he was younger.
In an interview with The Sun newspaper, he said: "I can never drink or take drugs again and I accept that.
"But the main result of making this record is that I no longer want to. In the past I’ve kept things in and never wanted to address issues I’ve had since I was a teenager.
"But coming close to losing my wife, my daughter and my career I’ve looked at stuff and resolved issues that I hadn’t for years."
Tom says the first song he wrote called ‘Hold On To Our Love’ was him pleading with Natalie to stay with him.
He explained: "The first song was Hold On To Our Love, which is about me pleading with Nat and saying, ‘Please we’ve been together a long time and been through so much, I know I have put you through the wringer, but let’s just hold on to this thing that we know is special’. The song kind of came out of that."
Now, the 37-year-old rocker – who was admitted to the Priory hospital in 2006 – has a new outlook and he says opening up about his "vulnerabilities" on the album was key to his newfound love for life.
He explained: "Now I don’t wake up and want to go on one of the binges that were ruling my life. Now I wake up and I’m happy about what lies ahead that day.
"And that’s why I am so proud of this album because it shows I’ve been honest with myself about my vulnerabilities. It’s allowed me to start loving life again."
‘The Wave’ is released on October 14.
