The Fugees will ‘absolutely’ release new music after ‘healing’ journey

The Fugees are planning to release new music.

The Ready or Not hitmakers haven’t released new material in three decades – though there have been various leaks since then – with their last album The Score dropping in 1996.

Lauryn Hill and Wyclef Jean – who are both playing Hill’s Diaspora Calling! festival at Milton Keynes National Bowl on Friday (07.08.26) – have spilled that being reunited has sparked a desire to hit the studio.

Asked by the BBC if they plan to record new material, she Hill said: “Absolutely”.

Jean added: “I’m back with my bandmate! So we’re in an amazing place. I think the energy is very important.”

Hill said they’ve been on an “incredible healing” journey and they want to share “that energy” with their fans. She said: “There was an incredible healing process that happened with us as a band and as bandmates, and as you said we just want to showcase that and give some of that energy to the world as well.”

Diaspora Calling!, which celebrates music and culture from across the African diaspora, originally launched in 2016 and has previously featured artists including Nas, Kehlani, Noname and Little Simz. Its 2026 edition will also mark Hill’s only confirmed UK appearance of the year.

Hill will headline the festival, with Wyclef Jean scheduled to perform his own set.

Two of Hill’s sons – YG Marley and Zion Marley, both grandchildren of reggae legend Bob Marley – will play.

The group reunited for a tour to mark the 25th anniversary of The Score in 2021.

However, drama struck in 2024, when former member Pras Michel sued Hill, forcing them to abandon their dates that year.

In March this year, he dropped his ongoing lawsuit against Hill, just weeks before he is due to go to prison.

The rapper – who is serving 14 years behind bars after being found guilty in 2023 of a string of charges in a $100 million political conspiracy case – had taken legal action against his former bandmate for claims including fraud, “gross mismanagement”, and breach of contract over their shortened 2023 tour and the cancellation of 2024’s Miseducation Anniversary concert series, but he voluntarily pulled the plug on the case.
