Strictly Come Dancing bosses ‘may seat audiences around tables to keep social distancing’

‘Strictly Come Dancing’ bosses are considering seating the audience around tables to allow the show to return.

It is hoped the BBC Latin and ballroom competition will return later this year, after the coronavirus pandemic cast doubt on this year’s series, and producers are keen to find a way to have a live crowd while still observing social distancing regulations.

An insider told The Sun newspaper’s Bizarre TV column: "’Strictly’ bosses know a huge part of the atmosphere of the show is the audience.

"Even though the social distancing would mean fewer people in the studio, it’s much better than nothing."

There is even a chance bosses could stick with the new look if it proves to be a popular change.

The source added: "The idea of the tables is a smart one because it would give the studio the feel of an old-school cabaret club. If it proves successful, they may even consider keeping it."

Although the Beeb is yet to announce the measures, the broadcaster explained they will be looking at "all productions on a case-by-case basis".

A spokesman said: "We will continue to review all productions on a case-by- case basis and to follow the latest news and advice from the Foreign Office, World Health Organisation and Public Health England."

There have been recent reports suggesting bosses could even take influence from ‘The Masked Singer’ and incorporate face coverings into performances amid the coronavirus pandemic.

An insider said: "Production are looking at all possibilities and are warming to the idea of theatrical masks as part of the costumes, having seen the success of ‘The Masked Singer’ on ITV.

"Location-wise they are considering scenic locations from rooftops, gardens to town squares and historical ballrooms – anywhere which not only looks great, but can work without a studio audience.

"Crew can come in and prepare the scene, light it beautifully, display props and set up cameras and get out of the way for the celebrity couple’s big performance."
