Steve McDonald blames himself for crash

Coronation Street’s Steve McDonald will blame himself for a dramatic mini-bus crash after being diagnosed with depression.

The taxi-driver, played by actor Simon Gregson, is in such a "dark place" that he will force himself to take responsibility for the crash caused by a couple of boy racers that will leave one of the ITV soap’s characters fighting for their life.

Speaking about the aftermath of the crash, Simon said: "He feels terrible but again rather than arguing that it wasn’t his fault, it was the idiots in the car, he hasn’t got it in him to fight back and so he just takes it.

"He is in such a dark place he think everything is his fault anyway now he has something to take responsibility for, something major he is blaming himself for."

However, the 40-year-old actor admits the accident may bring him and ex-girlfriend Michelle Connor (Kym Marsh) closer together, as he finally works up the courage to confess what he’s been going through.

He explained: "It starts with the fact that he walked away from everybody [in the accident] but then he blurts out that he has been diagnosed as having depression and that he has been feeling bad for a long time.

"She is very upset about it. Her thoughts change and she realises it wasn’t her and this is the turning point for them to start rebuilding their relationship."

Meanwhile, Corrie producer Stuart Blackburn has revealed the crash will be the catalyst for a number of dramatic storylines.

He said: "Everyone involved in filming these dramatic episodes is very proud of the end results. The stunt is breathtaking and is real edge of the seat stuff.

"But, in the spirit of great storytelling, the crash itself is just the start of the drama and will have far reaching effects for all the people involved in the coming months."
