Steve Carell to star in IQ 83

Steve Carell and Charlie Kaufman are collaborating on an adaptation of ‘IQ 83’.

Kaufman, whose previous work includes ‘Being John Malkovich’ and ‘Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind’, has been hired by Paramount Studios for a rewrite of the screenplay based on Arthur Herzog’s sci-fi novel.

Carell, 52, is set to play the role of Dr James Healey, who heads a group of scientists that accidentally unleash an experimental virus on the population, Deadline reports.

People infected by the virus find that their IQs begin to fall, meaning the scientists are in a race against time to discover a cure before they’re rendered too unintelligent to do so.

The producer of the project, Andrew Lazar, has been trying to get an adaptation of ‘IQ 83’ made for 20 years.

Meanwhile, Carell recently revealed that he wants to star in a musical.

The ‘Anchorman’ actor sang in a number of stage productions when he was a student, and says he would love to tread the boards once again.

He said: "I did a bunch of musicals back on college, ‘Oklahoma’, ‘Cabaret’. I would love to do a musical some time.

"I can carry a tune, I don’t think I’m a great singer but I could fake it."
