Simon Pegg: Star Trek 3 was nearly all about me

Simon Pegg was tempted to make ‘Star Trek 3’ all about himself.

The 45-year-old actor, who’s currently writing the new sci-fi movie, has revealed he nearly over-inflated the importance of his character Montgomery ‘Scotty’ Scott when he was penning the film.

He confessed: "It’s hard because the temptation is to big up your own part but it would look really obvious if the film was all me!"

What’s more, the Brit revealed he turned to his wife Maureen to master his character’s Scottish accent, while he also took advice from director JJ Abrams, who helmed 2009’s ‘Star Trek’ and the 2013 movie ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’.

He told ‘The Graham Norton Show’: "My wife was my dialect coach but my father-in-law wanted me to get a lot of Scottish phrases in so gave me a book called The Patter, basically a Scottish translation book with lots of weird words, and I was trying to filter them in.

"JJ took me aside one day and said, ‘Simon, people have got to understand you!’"

Earlier this month, Simon said he isn’t a "nerdy man-child" and insisted the public’s perception of him doesn’t quite chime with the reality.

He said: "I’m not quite the nerdy man-child that everyone thinks I am.

"I mean, I still love genre cinema, and I’m very excited to be in the ‘Star Trek’ films. But at home I’m not this toy-collecting, comic-book reading, video gaming … I’m just not, y’know?

"And I’m kind of feeling like it’s time to move on from that, like that phase of my life might be coming to an end. I’d quite like to do some more films that aren’t necessarily, er … set in space."
