Tom Hardy thinks he would have ended up in jail if he hadn't become an actor.
The 'Inception' actor is currently one of Hollywood's hottest properties, but he admits his rise to the top was fraught with "desperation", reckless behaviour and addiction.
He told Total Film magazine: "I was supported by an artistic family, a creative family, but my personal journey to becoming an actor was one of desperation. Like, 'This boy has to do something or he'll end up in jail!'
"And I'm very, very fortunate to be here today. My own personal story is exactly that - personal. But becoming an actor was not very far from what I was doing, but now I've found a medium where I can channel that into more constructive means, which is art and acting.
"As opposed to fantasising and acting out in the world, and causing all kinds of mayhem - which I don't do."
The handsome British star confessed he got ahead of himself when he started landing roles fresh out of drama school and soon got caught up with the shady side of the film industry.
The 36-year-old star candidly explained: "I was white-knuckling when I was younger. There are some people who are more susceptible and less susceptible to stimulus. And I was very reactionary. I don't have a lot of skin. I've learnt as I grow older to be less 'jumping' at everything.
"I had a brief stint with the Americans, with Hollywood, the movie industry, with 'Star Trek'. And the first year after drama school, I had 'Black Hawk Down' and 'Band of Brothers', and then 'Star Trek'. And I was like, 'This is it! Straight out of drama school, here we go!'
"But I had no idea of how to handle the industry, to interact with producers, executive producers, studios, even my fellow men! I was 24 - punching way above my weight. And it's taken being someone's dad, being divorced, going to rehab, having mortgages, playing different characters, doing theatre, waiting and then it not happening."
The new issue of Total Film magazine is on sale now.

Julia Roberts skipped her half-sister's public memorial in favour of a private family service.
The 'August: Osage County' actress wasn't among the mourners at St. Anne's Catholic Church and Shrine in Santa Monica on March 8 to say goodbye to Nancy Motes - who died from an apparent overdose aged 37 last month - but insiders say that is because she, her mother Betty Lou and other close family members chose to remember her privately instead.
A source told InTouch Weekly magazine: "The family didn't want the focus to be on them, they wanted it to be on Nancy and her memory.
"The whole Roberts family came and brought pictures of Nancy, each honoured her in their own way.
"It was tough for them, but I think Nancy would've been happy with the way it was done."
It has previously been claimed that Nancy - who had a "complex" relationship with her famous sibling - had left a "ranting" note prior to her death allegedly claiming the actress' fame had driven her to suicide.
Nancy's fiancé John Dilbeck said recently: "Nancy was proud of Julia but she had severe abandonment issues.
"She had a knee operation as a teen and piled on weight because she couldn't exercise. While her sister was the 'Pretty Woman', Nancy was an overweight, insecure teenager.
"Nancy was a tortured soul. She grew up in the shadow of a superstar as a sister and Julia's fame cast a cloud over her life.
"Nancy adored Julia but she became increasingly resentful of the way Julia behaved towards her. In Nancy's mind Julia was a bully."

Jamie Chung wants an "intimate" wedding
The 30-year-old actress admits she and fiancé Bryan Greenberg need to "work out" their nuptials as while she wants a small affair, the 'One Tree Hill' actor favours the idea of a big celebration.
She said: "He wants a big blow out and I want to keep it intimate, so there's certainly things we need to work out."
But the 35-year-old actor may get his wish as Jamie admitted Bryan is a better organiser than she is.
She told People. "We're equally excited... Actually, he's better at planning parties than I am."
Though the couple haven't set a date yet, the 'Believe' star knows who she wants to create her wedding gown.
She said: "Monique Lhuillier is a designer I lust for. I saw her Fall 2014 runway show and it was literally like an opera. I would love to wear one of her dresses!"
Though Jamie and Bryan - who got engaged in December after almost two years of dating - spent a lot of time with one another, they refuse to go to the gym together.
Jamie admitted: "He hates working out with me. Bryan says, 'It's so cheesy,' so we're not that couple."

Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't think we're "alone" in the universe.
The 48-year-old actress - who voices Kira Supernova, the wife of an alien who invades Earth in 'Escape From Planet Earth' - doesn't think the descriptions of other-worldly beings in TV and films are very accurate, but she is convinced there is life on other planets.
Asked if she believes in aliens, she said: "No. Well, I don't think we're alone in the universe. But I don't think aliens are how we have experienced them thus far on screen.
"We discovered that there may have been water elsewhere, and that was a massive and important discovery in the world of science, right? This suggests that something benefited from the water.
"But whether they wear funny outfits and they're clever and they say snarky things to each other and have wonderfully big sweet eyes? That, I'm dubious about. But I do enjoy the storytelling here on Earth."
The actress' character in 'Escape From Planet Earth' gave up her career to raise a family and Sarah - who has three children, son James and twin daughters Marion and Tabitha, with her husband Matthew Broderick - thinks Kira's story will appeal to many women experiencing the same "conflict" over their life choices.
In an interview with The Guardian newspaper, Sarah said: "I think she has made some decisions, and she speaks to a way that maybe other women feel, you know? She's left behind, and she's maybe conflicted about those choices. And she becomes defensive. Do you choose work over family? I think that's a position that a lot of women find themselves in.
"I think, a little bit, this film tries to talk about what it's like to remove yourself from your professional workplace and work from home as a parent. It's sweet, it's nicely done."

Sharon Stone loves being called a sex symbol.
The 'Basic Instinct' actress thinks it is a "pleasure" to still be praised for her attractiveness now she is in her 50s.
Speaking to Oprah Winfrey in an interview recorded before her 56th birthday on March 10, she said: "It's a pleasure for me now. I mean, I'm gonna be 56 years old. If people want to think I'm a sex symbol, it's, like, yeah. Think it up. You know. I mean, like, good for me.
"And good for every other lady of my age to feel themselves as a sex symbol. Because why shouldn't we feel a sex symbol in our 50s?"
Sharon insists she isn't fighting against her advancing years and thinks the concept of "ageless beauty" is "absurd".
She added: "I don't think ageless beauty exists. I think it's just a catch-phrase. And so, you know, I think that's absurd."
The blonde star - who is currently single and has adopted sons Roan, 13, Laird, eight, and Quinn, seven - believes it is important to take a holistic approach to life in order to feel at her best.
She explained: "To be the best you can be, you know, we have to recognise that it's an internal thing. Not just an external thing. We have to have internal health and internal wellness. And I think that's physical health, mental health, spiritual health.
"You know, I think it's a sense of ethics. It's everything, you know. If you want to keep yourself together, it's all things."

Lady Gaga thinks she's got "really fat".
The singer - who has admitted her weight fluctuates because of her love of Italian food - has been gorging on barbecue food and meat during her stay in Austin, Texas, and worries she has put on weight.
Explaining her floaty Gareth Pugh dress during an interview with Jimmy Kimmel at the South by Southwest festival, she confessed: "That's actually why I wore it because I am really fat right now because I have been eating BBQ. I had some at Stubb's because I am playing there and some Salt Lick too. Or any meat that I find on the street, I just eat."
Gaga has been soaking up the atmosphere at the festival, where she will deliver the SXSW keynote speech with Fuse's John Norris today (14.03.14), even though she doesn't remember much from the live sets she's watched so far.
The 27-year-old star - who previously admitted to being addicted to marijuana - said: "I have had a really great time. I have been going out every single night and seeing as much music as I can. The thing I have missed the most is going out and seeing live music. I don't remember a lot of what happens but I know I was there and I have seen live music."
The eccentric superstar also praised her loyal fans, her Little Monsters, for going to extreme lengths to get close to her, with some lucky fans winning tickets to see her perform at Stubb's.
She added: "I saw some videos on Instagram of them jumping off buildings to get tickets, but that's the kind of fans I have and I'm a lucky girl."

Taylor Swift has poked fun at her dating image in a new video.
The 'We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together' hitmaker - whose former boyfriends include Jake Gyllenhaal, Harry Styles, and Conor Kennedy - has made a clip called 'For Your ACM Consideration' alongside Scott Borchetta, the founder of her record label Big Machine Records.
As the 51-year-old executive tries to speak to Taylor, 24, about making the For Your Consideration film to help win votes for the 2014 Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards, the 'Red' star claims to be in the middle of something "pressing" but puts the phone down to paint her nails.
She then speaks to her friend about boy problems, with the pal confiding: "We were done, and then like a week later, they got together and that's like a few weeks ago and now they're in Italy."
Taylor then replies: "That's a big jump! That's a little fast, and I'm saying that. This guy is the reason why they made that block feature on the iPhone. You need to put his name in your phone as a weird word that's unattractive like 'grundle.'"
Scott then continues trying to get Taylor - who famously has a pet cat named Meredith - on the phone but is unsuccessful.
He rages: If I didn't know better, I'd say she's playing with that f**king cat!"
The video then cuts to the singer lifting her pet in the air and saying: "Where's the princess of Kitty Town? Who's a pretty kitty? You are! You're the prettiest kitty in the world."

Tom Fletcher has become a dad for the first time.
The McFly singer's wife Giovanna gave birth to a "beautiful baby boy" on Thursday night (13.03.14) and the happy couple - who first met when they were 13 and tied the knot in May 2012 - are thrilled with their new arrival.
The 'Star Girl' singer announced on Twitter this morning: "Yep, Mrs Fletcher gave birth to our insanely gorgeous son yesterday at 7pm. He is healthy, beautiful and I've already changed his nappy."
Tom's joke comes after he admitted he was studying videos of how to change nappies ahead of his child's arrival because he was determined to be a hands-on dad.
Meanwhile, Giovanna couldn't contain her excitement as she updated her followers about the baby's birth.
She enthused: "THRILLED to announce the safe arrival of our little BOY! Born last night at 7pm! I can't stop staring at and kissing him! I'm in love!"
The childhood sweethearts publicly announced the pregnancy in a YouTube video last October and admitted they had chosen not to find out the sex of the baby.
Tom said: "We don't know the sex of the baby. We're taking bets from all our friends on whether it's a boy or girl, what date and all that malarky."
