Kate Hudson thinks relationships are "challenging".
The 35-year-old actress - whose four-year relationship with Muse frontman Matt Bellamy has been the subject of recent speculation they are on the rocks - believes it takes a lot of "work" to share life with another person, and thinks the secret to lasting commitment is to accept one another's flaws.
She said: "Relationships are the most challenging things.
"It's where you do the most work in your life. You come face-to-face with yourself, and if you can deal with realising we're all flawed, accept it and work with it, you might have a really amazing, lasting relationship."
Kate - who has 10-year-old son Ryder from her marriage to Chris Robinson and two-year-old son Bingham with Matt - thinks the way to make a relationship work seems "simple" but isn't so easy in practice.
Speaking to the new issue of Self magazine, she said: "If I look at my parents [Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell], who've been together thirtysomething years, I'd say no matter what they've been through, they share similar values and really like each other..
"It sounds simple, but it's not."
And the 'Something Borrowed' star also admitted she doesn't think it is easy to be happy.
She said: "I think happiness is a practice. But not the sort you find in self-help books, where you smile and have a vision board. You're fooling yourself to think that's how you're going to find it.
"I love the idea of a gratitude journal, but there are times when mine turns into a venting journal. Not so grateful, just a big ol' vent!"

Jay Z's alleged extorter claims he actually saved the recordings from the "stupid" rapper.
Chauncey Mahan was detained by police on Friday (18.04.14) after reportedly blackmailing the '99 Problems' hitmaker, demanding $110,000 in exchange for recordings from 2002 and 2003 which he took while he was interning for the hip-hop star and are now said to be worth $30 million.
The former intern has now hit back at Roc Nation's claims he stole the tracks and was holding them ransom, telling TMZ the record label asked him to keep track of Jay Z's music because the 44-year-old star was just "a stupid kid smoking blunts" at the time, and was reckless with his intellectual property.
Chauncey insists he's repeatedly told Roc Nation he had the masters - which include 'I Just Wanna Love U (Give It 2 Me)' and 'Holla' - over the last decade and only requested the money last week when he could no longer afford to pay the storage fee.
He claims he only asked for the cash as compensation for keeping the recordings for 12 years in Northridge, California.
The LAPD took the ex-intern into custody late last week, but he was released pending further investigation and officers said they couldn't help until a police report was filed in New York since the recordings were never reported missing or stolen.
Roc Nation sent an employee to meet Chauncey at the storage locker, paying him $2,500 to open it, and were able to verify that the never-before-heard tunes were indeed Jay-Z's.
The so-called culprit also added that some of the masters sound "awful" in his chat with TMZ.

Courtney Cox insists it is impossible to reunite the 'Friends' cast.
The 49-year-old actress - who shot to fame playing Monica Geller in the hit sit-com - is adamant a reunion programme would never happen because she finds it difficult to even get former co-stars Jennifer Aniston, Lisa Kudrow, Matthew Perry, Matt LeBlanc and David Schwimmer together for social gatherings.
She said: "Let me tell you something: there's six friends and I've been trying to put together a cast dinner for 10 years. It doesn't happen! I can get the girls to come, maybe Matthew Perry. Matt LeBlanc canceled last time right at the last minute, Schwimmer lives here [in New York City], so it's just not gonna happen."
The 'Cougar Town' actress gets tired of being asked about a possible reunion because her answers always get her into "trouble".
Asked by talk show host David Letterman if she is tired of the questions, she said: "Only because once you say, 'Well, I'd like it,' then they have to contact every other cast member and be like, 'Courteney's into it!' And then I get in trouble. It's not going to happen."
And the brunette star doesn't think there is much scope for a reunion story if the cast agreed to return to the programme, which ended in 2004 after 10 years.
She said: "We did the whole show on a soundstage in Monica's apartment. So what are you gonna do?"

Kerry Katona's new baby stopped breathing for eight minutes after her birth.
The reality star and her fiancé George Kay were panic-stricken when their newborn daughter Dylan-Jorge turned blue and her heart stopped just moments after the delivery, and couldn't believe how quickly the happy moment had turned into a nightmare.
The 33-year-old blonde told Britain's OK! magazine: "We're over the moon George and I are both crying at how absolutely beautiful she is. Then I had a weird sensation that something wasn't right. She wasn't making a noise... but she was moving.
"Ten minutes after giving birth she was on my chest and she collapsed. She stopped breathing and her heart stopped."
George added: "Next thing the midwives are taking the baby off us and started reviving her. A crash team came running in and they took her to the other side of the room. Kerry's shaking and screaming, 'Where's my baby?' She was covered in fake tan at the time and the colour just drained from her.
"I leant across Kerry so she couldn't see what was going on. They were trying to revive Dylan, who was going blue behind me, and Kerry's just full of tears on the bed."
Dylan was miraculously revived, but things soon went from bad to worse as Kerry almost died when the placenta ruptured inside of her.
She recounted: "I was losing loads and loads of blood because the placenta didn't come out and it burst inside me. I was in shock. They manually took out the placenta.
"I was just screaming and lying on the operating table with all these lights above me. Then I start throwing up everywhere and George is crying. You bargain with God, 'Please let her survive and take me'. I thought, 'This is it, we're both going to die.' "
George explained: "In my lifetime I've seen some horrific things but the thought of losing your two most loved people at the same time... I was a mess."
Kerry - who already has daughters Molly, 12, and Lilly-Sue, 11, with her first husband Brian McFadden and Heidi, seven, and son Max, five, with second husband Mark Croft - has made a full recovery and is looking forward to spending quality time with the new addition to their family.

Nicolas Cage once applied to be a contestant on a dating show.
The 'Joe' actor - who has sons Weston, 23, with ex-girlfriend Christina Fulton and Kal-El, eight, with third wife Alice Kim - was obsessed with 'The Dating Game' as a teenager, and managed to get accepted for the show, despite being only 15 years old, but his father refused to let him take part.
He said: "My first audition I was underage. Only 15. Even that young I tried to be accepted on 'The Dating Game.'
"I used to love seeing that, and always somehow managed to, although my father said I couldn't watch it. Anyhow, he wouldn't let me do the show."
The 50-year-old star - who won the Best Actor Oscar in 1996 for his role in 'Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas' - also insisted he has a very "normal" home life with Alice and Kal-El and is very focused on the future, rather than reliving his former glories.
Speaking to the New York Post newspaper, he said:
"I'm a regular at- home dad to him -- not some movie star. I play with him, go out with him, do all those parent-child things like any other father.
"I don't play my old movies. Don't look to make him see them. Don't talk about those old days. I intend to maintain a normal, natural home life. I try to look at the future, not the past.
"The same with my Oscar. I'm living today. I'm a parent. I keep the totems away. My awards are safe. But they're not in my home. The totems are in the past."

Peaches Geldof was remembered with "words, music, and poetry" at her funeral yesterday (21.04.14).
Over 150 mourners - including Kate Moss and Jamie Hince, Alexa Chung, Jaime Winstone, the Duchess of York, and Nick Grimshaw - crammed into St Mary Magdalene and St Lawrence Church in Davington, Kent to pay their respects to the late star, following her tragic death earlier this month.
Parish priest Rev Tracey Bateson -- who led the service -- said: "It was in tribute to the person.
"Everyone conveyed that in their own ways through words, music and poetry."
Peaches' father Bob Geldof was among the speakers at the service, and was determined it should be an "upbeat" celebration of his daughter's life.
A source said: "The service was upbeat. It was highlighting the good moments. Bob made it clear it was to be a positive day about celebrating the best of her life."
Peaches body was carried into the church in a sky-blue coffin, which was adorned with a picture of her, husband Thomas Cohen, their sons Astala, 23 months, and Phaedra, 11 months, and their pets, as well as peach tree branches on the sides.
Following the service, it is believed many of the mourners headed back to Bob's home for a wake, with a white marquee erected in the grounds of his home.
It is believed Peaches - whose funeral took place at the church where she and her husband married in 2012, and where her mother Paula Yates was also laid to rest in 2000 - will be cremated today (22.04.14) and her ashes scattered at her father's house.
Her death remains unexplained, with a post-mortem examination found to be inconclusive. A toxicology report is expected to be concluded in the coming weeks.

James Van Der Beek received a career "wake-up call" when he was asked to appear on 'Dancing with the Stars'.
The former 'Dawson's Creek' actor felt he needed to "reinvent" himself when he was approached to compete on the celebrity dance contest, an offer his agents didn't even want to tell him about.
Recalling the approach, he told 'Access Hollywood': "That's a wake-up call! It's time to do some reinvention.
"[My people told me], 'We got an offer and we legally have to tell you that it came in [for] 'Dancing with the Stars.' We don't think you should take it'..."
When 'Dawson's Creek' ended in 2003 after six years, James, 37, decided to take some time out but quickly realised he was no longer as in demand as he once was and took a different approach to his career, accepting offers he thought would be fun.
He added: "Right after 'Dawson's Creek' I needed to take some time out, I was burned out.
"I was passing on a lot of things and wanted to play a certain type of role and when you pass enough, people stop offering after a while.
"And I got to a point where I realised, 'You know what? I'm going to start saying yes to things. If I haven't done it before and it seems like it going to be fun, why not?' "
And these days, the 'Friends With Better Lives' actor couldn't be happier with his work.
He said: "I've been lucky enough to hang around for a number of years. One of the things I've got to do is reinvent and I've been having a great time...
"I've somehow managed to stay out of jail, rehab and bankruptcy court and now I get to laugh all day."

Lindsay Lohan is doing "fantastic" despite her recent miscarriage.
The troubled actress revealed on the finale of her reality show 'Lindsay' that she had lost a baby, but her parents insist she is putting the tragedy behind her and is doing well.
Her mother Dina said in a text message: "Lindsay is fine."
Her father Michael added to the New York Daily News newspaper's Confidenti@l column: "It's a private family matter, but she's doing fantastic. She's doing very well."
The 'Mean Girls' star made the revelation when explaining why she had taken a break from filming the OWN show, which chronicled her attempts to relaunch her career following her sixth stint in rehab.
She said: "No one knows this, and we can finish after this, I had a miscarriage for the two weeks that I took off."
After a long pause, the flame-haired beauty added: "It's a very long story," and failed to offer any other details, including who the father of her unborn child was.
Meanwhile, the 27-year-old star has denied giving an interview to online publication KODE, which claimed she had drank and taken ecstasy at the Coachella festival earlier this month and boasted of dating a married man.
Her spokesperson said: "Lindsay never spoke to any journalist at KODE. The interview was completed via email. We have no comprehension on why a journalist would fabricate this content and distribute it in such an irresponsible way."
The publication is standing by their article, and its writer, who is known only as The Kurator.

Robert Pattinson is reportedly dating Katy Perry's best friend.
The 'Cosmopolis' actor is said to have struck up a close relationship with the 'Roar' singer's "super stylist" and confidant Cleo Wade, and they all spent the majority of Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival together over the weekend.
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Cleo is one of Katy's best friends, so Rob has been spending time with their gang. It's early days but they seem to have good chemistry. They spent a lot of time together over the weekend."
The reports will put an end to rumours that Katy,29, had been dating the 'Twilight' hunk following her split from John Mayer.
Katy - who was previously married to Russell Brand - has previously dismissed speculation of a romance with Robert by explaining she has a "big sister" relationship with the 27-year-old actor.
She said: "He's my bud, I'm like his big sister. We just hang out. The other day, I said, 'One of the things I'm most proud of is not sleeping with you, Robert'. And that's true."
As well as Robert, the 'Part of Me' hitmaker was recently romantically linked with Diplo as they appeared to be "more than friends" at a Coachella party earlier this month.
