Damon Albarn found heroin "very agreeable".
The Blur frontman, who began taking the drug in the 1990s after he came home to find then-girlfriend Justine Frischmann using the illegal substance, and admits it helped him think outside of the box when it came to writing songs, so doesn't "totally" think taking it was a mistake.
He said: "It was part of me growing up. Look, I didn't go out and look for it. I turned up at my house and there is was, made on the table. What should I have done? Leave my life and reject it, or stay in my own house and somehow assimilate it into my life? Once I tried it, I found it initially very agreeable, and very creative."
The 46-year-old singer - who has 14-year-old daughter Missy with girlfriend Suzi Winstanley - doesn't regret defending his use of heroin but admits his comments could be taken out of context.
Asked if it was a touchy subject, he told Time Out magazine: "I'm not touchy. I'm just aware there's an ambiguity and that my explanation can get lost in the sensational amplification of things.
"So I'm left with two options, either become really guarded and aloof, and return to this reputation I've had over the years of being a difficult b*****d, or I just don't talk at all. It's really frustrating."

Kris Jenner has been blasted by her sister.
The showbiz matriarch has "changed" and got caught up in a showbiz lifestyle, Karen Houghton has claimed, but her younger sibling doesn't think the 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians' star is happy.
Karen told RadarOnline.com: "I can't get to her anymore. But I guess it's the money.
"She's a huge celebrity and now she has changed. I'm not saying good or bad. But I've seen what it can do to Kris... ever since she moved to LA.
"I think my sister needs inner peace. She's not warm and fuzzy. She works so hard and making money, but is it making her happy? I don't know.
"I think she needs to laugh more. She's very serious."
Karen claims Kris - who split from husband Bruce Jenner last October after 22 years of marriage - has "isolated" herself from the rest of her family and she doesn't like her relatives telling her what they really think.
She added: "She's isolating herself from the family. I tried to reach out to her, but she's very aloof.
"I tell her like it is and she doesn't like it. If something makes me upset, I tell her. She doesn't like it because of who she is. I love her, but I tell her how I feel.
"I get p***ed off at her because she doesn't respond to me. If you think your sister would call you back, she doesn't. And it hurts me. I don't care how much money you have or who you are, you're my sister. I'm not afraid of her."

Tori Spelling says Dean McDermott's infidelity "broke her heart".
The 'Beverly Hills 90210' actress was left devastated when her husband confirmed he had cheated on her with Emily Goodhand and has admitted she is unsure whether they now have a future together.
Speaking after a joint therapy session on her new reality show 'True Tori', she said: "I know he's my soulmate. I know he's the love of my life. I also know he broke my heart."
Though she admitted she "still loves" Dean, Tori - who has children Liam, seven, Stella, five, Hattie, two, and 18-month-old Finn with her spouse - added that "this might not have a happy ending."
She also said: "I'm so scared we won't grow old together. That's my biggest fear."
Earlier in the episode, the 40-year-old star had admitted she didn't initially believe the rumours that Dean had cheated on her.
She said: "I didn't think for a second that it was true."
However, when she confronted her spouse - who checked into rehab in December 2013, the day after confirming the claims - his unusual body language gave him away.
She recalled: "His right eyebrow was shaking up and down ... and I said, 'I've never seen your eyebrow shake before."
When Tori met with Dean, 47, in rehab, he pledged to change his life as he didn't "want to lose" the actress.
He told her: "I've hurt you so bad. That's why I'm dealing with my alcoholism and my addiction.
"I cheated on you and I lied to you. I'm sorry. I don't want to lose you."
However, she replied: "I'm angry that you cheated on me. I've been let down over and over and over again."

Meryl Streep "hates" inviting people to awards ceremonies.
The 64-year-old actress - who has been nominated for an Oscar 18 times and won three of the coveted statuettes - picked up the 14th annual Monte Cristo Award by the Eugene O'Neill Theater Center for her "artistic commitment to excellence and accomplishment" in the arts in New York on Monday (21.04.14), and though he was there to support her, her husband Don Gummer insisted he no longer gets "excited" when his wife wins a prize.
Asked if he gets sick of watching her pick up honours, Don told the New York Daily News newspaper's Confidenti@l column: "Not sick, I just don't get excited. She just always hates asking people or having people asked to come support her. She gets tired of it ... after a while what can they say."
Don also admitted he and his wife - who have been married for 37 years and have children Henry Wolfe, 34; Mamie, 30; Grace, 27; and Louisa, 22, together - squabble over household chores, and a regular argument between them is whether to "wash the dishes or put them in the dishwasher."
Meryl was presented with the accolade by actor Joe Grifasi, who told the audience - which included Catherine Zeta-Jones and Michael Douglas - about a time he and the actress went to a beach several years ago.
They swam out to a rock and she told him she wanted to be married with children by the time she was 35.
And in her acceptance speech, Meryl also recalled the incident, saying: "Thank you to my husband for my four children that I dreamed up on that rock on the beach that day. He came along thank God."
And the 'Devil Wears Prada' star also received a comical musical tribute from songwriting duo Robert Lopez and Kristen Anderson-Lopez, who reworked 'Love is an Open Door' from 'Frozen' to be about Meryl.
A source said: "It was about how much they love Meryl and her movies and the chorus was, 'We want to be Meryl Streep.' At the end, they sort of whispered Meryl f***ing Streep, which was very funny."

Katy Perry made children cry after gatecrashing a five year old's birthday party.
The 'Dark Horse' hitmaker dressed up as a clown for the video for her track 'Birthday' and carried out a prank at a party, where she attacked a man with a piñata stick and staged a car accident, but the spoof incident left children in tears.
Eye witnesses told TMZ, Katy pranked a real birthday party and most of the guests had no idea it was a joke.
Children were crying and one woman "stormed away" visibly upset by her antics.
The hidden camera gag was shot at Knollwood Country Club outside Los Angeles and a video obtained by the website shows one little girl saying, "Mommy, I want to leave."
During an interview on 'Jimmy Kimmel Live', Katy spoke about going "undercover" at the bash, but didn't mention the fall out.
Speaking earlier this week, she said: "I just did a music video completely undercover as five of the world's worst birthday entertainers, because I was sick of making gorgeous music videos where I'm sexual."
Jimmy joked: "People are sick of that, yeah, really tired of looking at you."
Katy, 29, then previewed a clip of the video which sees her dressed as a clown drinking and burping, saying: "I'm not really a birthday party entertainer, I'm just trying to get some cash on the side," adding, "Happy birthday kids."

Leslie Mann regrets using her marriage as inspiration for 'This Is 40'.
The 'Other Woman' star admits she became "annoyed" by the "invasive" questions about her relationship with director Judd Apatow when she starred alongside Paul Rudd in her husband's 2012 romantic comedy, because people failed to understand that aspects had been "exaggerated" for entertainment value.
Leslie, 42, told Stylist magazine: "The thing that bothered me, and I always tell Judd this, a lot of it is based on our lives but some of it is based on our friends' lives or whatever. I mean, we decided to put it out there, it's our own fault, but I did feel it was a little invasive at times. I kept getting annoyed because it was like, 'Argh! Everyone's in my business!"
Leslie - who has daughters Maude and Iris with Judd - insists it has always been her own choice to put her career on hold in order to raise her children and she often feels "incredibly guilty" when she has to leave them to shoot her next film.

Gwyneth Paltrow has been given a temporary restraining order against an alleged stalker.
The 'Iron Man' actress has taken legal measures against Nickolaos Gavrilis, ordering him to remain at least 100 yards from her, her estranged husband Chris Martin and their two children, Apple and Moses.
The super fan is accused of trying to sneak into their family homes in London and Los Angeles, according to ET Canada.
The court petition granted last Friday (18.04.14) featured details of the incidents from Terry Abbott, Gwyneth's Director of Security.
The first attempted break-in allegedly occurred in September 2012, when Nickolaos tried to get into the GOOP mogul's house by saying he had a business meeting with her.
Legal action was taken when the supposed stalker "made a third attempt" to access Gwyneth's residence in Los Angeles, California, earlier this month.
He was also spotted on April 10 near the Tracy Anderson Studio, the actress' regular fitness haunt.
The man has also been accused of posting "disturbing" messages on Gwyneth's Facebook page, causing her "substantial emotional distress".
Dr. David Glaser, a clinical and forensic psychiatry specialist, backed up the claims, saying the man poses a "danger of great and irreparable harm to Ms. Paltrow, her family, and those close to them."
A hearing will take place on May 12 to decide whether the restraining order should be made permanent.

Laura Prepon thinks Tom Cruise is "hot".
The 'Orange is the New Black' actress insists rumours she is dating the 'Mission: Impossible' star are untrue, but she is "flattered" by the speculation, even though she finds it funny.
She told website The Daily Beast: "I'm flattered because I think he's hot, so I'm like, 'Oh, that's nice,' and apparently he's very gentlemanly with me.
"Apparently we get along great and he knows that I have a favourite bottle of wine that I didn't even know I had."
The 34-year-old star finds some of the claims about her personal life "unbelievable" and she is baffled by the level of fictitious detail given about her supposed relationship with the 51-year-old actor.
Speaking to Sheknows.com, she said: "Apparently I'm dating Tom Cruise right now. And apparently he doesn't want me doing the show because I portray a lesbian and I'm a Scientologist. This is false. Where are they even getting this stuff? It's unbelievable to me."
It had previously been claimed Tom and Laura first went on a date at the Manor Hotel in Los Angeles last November and the actor - who was previously married to Mimi Rogers, Nicole Kidman and Katie Holmes - was instantly smitten.
A source previously said: "They spent three hours laughing and joking. It's clear Tom is smitten and after the date he was on cloud nine.
"They had their second date at the restaurant too, meeting for Sunday Brunch and she then accompanied him a few days later to a dinner party at John [Travolta] and Kelly's [Preston] home."
Laura previously dated 'Malcolm in the Middle' actor Chris Masterson before their reported split in 2012.

Mary-Kate Olsen wants a more private home.
The actress-turned-designer was reportedly unhappy with the East 10th Street townhouse she and her fiancé Olivier Sarkozy bought in New York City in 2012 because it didn't feel secure enough and so has sold the property despite never moving in.
The couple, who got engaged in February following a two-year courtship, sold the property last year after snapping it up for $6.25 million, and are still searching for the perfect family home.
A source told the New York Post's Page Six: "Mary-Kate was not happy with the house, it was not private enough for her. She needs a garage or something with a more secure entrance."
Mary-Kate and Olivier, the half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, are apparently happy to search for their dream pad in a less trendy location if it means more privacy, and are "even looking in Turtle Bay".
The publication also recently reported the couple, who have a 17-year age gap, were checking out a house uptown on 94th Street.
Money should be no object for the pair since Mary-Kate's engagement ring is allegedly worth a massive $81,250.
Olivier bought the vintage Cartier ring at a Sotheby's auction on February 6. The stunning rock boasts a four-carat European-cut diamond surrounded by 16 calibré-cut sapphires and 1.5 carats of diamonds.
