Lorde thinks her family are "insane".
The 'Royals' singer insists she is the quietest member of her household and though having to compete for attention with her three siblings meant she is unafraid to speak her mind, she has struggled to "find her voice".
She said: "We're one of the louder, more insane families. We're all super creative and impulsive.
"It's been a good environment to learn how to speak your mind, you know? And be feisty. And unapologetic.
"But weirdly, I'm the quietest member of my family. It took me a while to be able to find a voice in terms of being able to talk to people."
As she has grown more successful, the 17-year-old star - whose real name is Ella Yelich-O'Connor - admits she feels less like she needs to adopt a persona to be confident on stage.
She told Stylist magazine: "Having been on the road and performing for the better half of a year, I've found it easier for me to not have to step into some sort of alter ego or split personality anymore.
"I don't feel like, when I walk off stage, I have to be woken up. I'm confident I am there the whole time."

Kieran Hayler flirted with Katie Price's married pal in front of her.
The former glamour model was shocked to discover her husband's seven-month affair with close friend Jane Pountney last week, but another pal insists it wasn't too surprising as the pair always indulged in "sexual banter".
Katie's former friend Jemma Henley said: "Kieran and Jane did seem to flirt a lot in front of Katie. They are quite flirty people and there's always sexual banter going on in the house. They would walk around holding hands and no one would think anything of it, especially because of Katie's friendship with Jane and how much Kieran supposedly loved Katie. It would never cross your mind that anything more would happen."
Katie - who has nine-month-old son Jett with Kieran and is pregnant with their second child - revealed Kieran's "full blown sexual affair" with Jane on Twitter last week, which was later confirmed by Jane and her husband Derrick.
Jemma predicts her former pal - who also has children Harvey, 11, Junior, eight, and Princess, six, from previous relationships - will have a tough time getting over the betrayal by her both her husband and good friend of 20 years.
She added to Britain's Star magazine: "It's going to be ten times harder than her other break-ups because she hasn't just lost her husband - Jane is like a sister to her."

Jenny McCarthy suffers from heart palpitations.
'The View' co-host, who is engaged to New Kids on the Block singer Donnie Wahlberg, admits she has to take it relatively easy in the gym even if she gains weight, as she can't put her body under any unnecessary stress.
The 41-year-old blonde beauty told the Shape magazine: "I was definitely up after the holidays last year, so I tried what everyone always says to do: running. I was on that treadmill every day for 45 minutes.
"I didn't do anything fancy with intervals to spike my pulse rate, because I have palpitations and my heart can't handle the intensity.
"I did a moderate pace and kept it there the whole time. After a few weeks, the extra weight dropped off."
Jenny, who previously said she gets panic attacks, no longer weighs herself, as she doesn't think it's healthy to obsess about it.
She said: "The last time I weighed myself was 12 years ago, when I left the hospital with my newborn son, Evan, and I was 185 pounds.
"Now I measure by how my jeans fit. But I want to be real here and tell you that my weight goes up and down a lot."

Drew Barrymore's new baby has had a "calming" effect on her life.
The 'Blended' actress - who already had 19-month-old Olive - welcomed her second daughter, Frankie, into the world with husband Will Kopelman on April 22, and despite being exhausted, she is thrilled with their new addition.
Asked how being a mother for the second time feels, she told E! News: "Better, just on every level. It's so much more work, but it is so much more calming in a way.
"'Frankie is sister,' Olive says, and she is into her and it's amazing, life is so good."
But the blonde beauty, 39, is suffering from a lack of sleep.
She said: "Every night at 10pm when I get in bed, I've never been more excited to just lay down for a little while, and then you sleep for six hours if you're lucky and you're back up."
Drew recently said she wouldn't let her children pursue a career in acting until they are at least 18 years old because she wants to protect them from potentially damaging things.
She said: "I don't like the idea of young girls growing up with social media, because I know how sensitive they are. But there's no going back.
"If you totally shelter your kids, that's not normal, but I don't want mine to have mobile phones until a certain age.
"I will never let my children act. When they're 18, if they want to, but not before."

Ashton Kutcher is doing everything he can to support Mila Kunis during her pregnancy.
The 36-year-old actor and his 30-year-old fiancée are expecting their first child, rumoured to be a baby girl, later this year and he can't wait to be a father.
A source told PEOPLE magazine: "Ashton has been taking such good care of Mila. He's doting on her and telling her she looks beautiful. He understands she's going through changes and he hasn't judged her for it."
The insider added: "Ashton supports her 100 percent.
"Ashton was meant to be a father. It's all he can talk about!"
The couple splashed out on a new $10,000 million 7,351 square foot mansion in Beverly Hills after he put his $12 million bachelor pad on the market, as they wanted a more child-friendly house that is closer to his office.
Another source told Us Weekly magazine: "The house is perfect for a family."
The property is "very traditional and different" from the star's previous modern homes and includes access to "hiking trails that they can get to just outside their front door."
Their new two-story abode, which is located in an exclusive gated community where Nicole Kidman and Cameron Diaz reside, also features three bedrooms, four bathrooms, a large porch, kidney-shaped pool, vegetable garden and has "lots of privacy."
While Ashton's personal life is going well, CBS announced on Wednesday (14.05.14) that his show 'Two and a Half Men' will be axed after its upcoming 12th season.
Ashton replaced Charlie Sheen on the sitcom after he was fired from the show over his erratic behaviour in 2010.

Charlize Theron claims she will remember Seth MacFarlane on her deathbed.
The 'A Million Ways to Die in the West' star, who is dating Sean Penn, admits she always admired the actor, writer and director from afar and is glad he has become a close friend.
She told PEOPLE magazine: "The most flattering thing you could say to me is that I could be a match to him. I am a huge fan and have been for many, many years."
She added: "He's definitely the kind of person that from afar fascinates me. Then you have this opportunity to know someone, and when they don't let you down, that's such a gift. The thing you remember when you're 80 and lying on your deathbed is that. I'll remember the friendship and working with Seth on this movie."
The 38-year-old blonde beauty previously credited the 'Family Guy' creator for reigniting her love of acting.

Rihanna and Drake have reportedly split up again.
The on-again, off-again couple, who rekindled their relationship in February after briefly dating in 2009, have allegedly called off their romance after a series of arguments.
A source told UsMagazine.com: "Rihanna and Drake had another fight. He is too in love with her, which has always been the problem. They have been fighting, but that could all change any day now. It is how it always is with them."
Another source said they are "currently on yet another break."
The 'Stay' hitmaker, 26, and the 27-year-old 'Hold On, We're Going Home' singer had been inseparable in recent months and friends insisted last month that they "were always meant to be together."
One insider said: "They got on so well and have always had a special connection from the moment they met...and now they have found each other again, everyone just feels like this is it.
"Their friends are so happy that they're together. There's a real feeling among their inner circle that they were always meant to be together. They really are made for one another. Everyone knows it. And Drake could not be happier. They couldn't be better suited."
The pair were first spotted out together when Rihanna joined Drake at Soixante Dix Neuf nightclub in Paris in February, shortly after the rapper admitted she was his dream girl.
He said: "I mean, I think about it. Like, 'Man that would be good.' We have fun together. She's cool and s**t. But we're just friends. That's my dog for life."

Kelly Rowland and Tim Witherspoon are too busy to go on honeymoon.
The former Destiny's Child star and her manager tied the knot in an intimate ceremony in Costa Rica last Friday (09.05.14), but are already back to work.
A source told PEOPLE.com: "Kelly was really happy, Tim was happy, and it was a great break for everybody from the normal grind, but now they're all going back to work."
The 33-year-old singer and her new husband invited just 30 guests, including her former bandmates Beyoncé Knowles and Michelle Williams, to their island ceremony, which took place in two private residences.
The insider also said the couple kept their wedding simple and didn't have bridesmaids or groomsmen.
Beyoncé's mother, Tina Knowles, as well as her sister, Solange Knowles and boyfriend Alan Ferguson were also there for the festivities, but the 'Drunk in Love' hitmaker's husband Jay Z, who was attacked by Solange at a Met Gala afterparty in New York City on May 5, was not present, as he stayed home with their two year-old daughter, Blue Ivy.
Kelly previously insisted she wanted her nuptials to be a low-key affair.
She said: "I think we really just want it to be us and our pastor. That's it. I mean, we are the only two that [are] going to be in the marriage."
The 'Kisses Down Low' singer was previously engaged to footballer Roy Williams, but they split in January 2005.

Kim Kardashian and Kanye West are set to make $21 million from their upcoming wedding.
The couple - who have 11-month-old daughter North together - will tie the knot in Paris on May 24 and are reportedly "cutting deals left and right" in order to profit from their lavish nuptials, even though the event won't be filmed for 'Keeping Up with the Kardashians.'
A source told In Touch magazine that the 33-year-old reality TV star is allowing the E! network to capture "everything leading up to and after" their big day.
The insider explained: "She's taping everything else so she can get things for free in exchange for the exposure.
"They realised how much their wedding was costing, so they told E! they wouldn't allow parts of it to be taped unless the network offered them more than $15 million, which is what Kim got for her wedding to Kris [Humphries].
"Her mom couldn't help herself either. Kris [Jenner] is trying to get them another $4 million for their wedding photos."
Kim recently let a camera crew film her Parisian-themed bridal shower at the Beverly Hills' Penninsula Hotel, where a source said that everything was "paid for or sponsored by brands that wanted exposure."
Kim and Kanye - who got engaged last October - previously insisted their wedding would be small and intimate, with just their close friends and family present, but her show's producer Ryan Seacrest believes it will still be an "amazing" affair.
He told Access Hollywood on Monday (12.04.14): "Here's what I would guess. It would be one of the most amazing ceremonies that has ever been had. I think that we'll all sort of smile and love that fact that you can see how much he adores her and she adores him."
