Robin Wright thinks Hollywood is a difficult place "if you have integrity".
The 'House of Cards' star refused to take "wife and arm candy" roles which would have raised her profile, and instead concentrate on raising her daughter Dylan, 23, and son Hopper, 20, with ex-husband Sean Penn while waiting for a properly engaging part to play.
She told Town and Country magazine: "Hollywood is difficult to navigate if you have integrity, so I opted not to work if there wasn't enough to do in a role, which doesn't have to do with the role's size.
"If there's nothing for me to do as an actress, that's frustrating ... I'd rather go work at a menial labour job, where I can actually get my hands dirty."
The 48-year-old actress admits her decision to stand back had an affect on her, adding: "In a sense it hurts, because you're like, 'I want to play too! I just don't want to play that way.
"I'm not up there with Kate Winslet and Julia Roberts. I don't sell tickets. I've known that for a long time."
Robin - who is now engaged to be married to Ben Foster - also said she had considered plastic surgery.
She added: "I was really considering that stuff, because in Hollywood the pressure's there.
You better lift that face and pump those lips and hike those boobs! And I was like, 'I don't want to do that. I'm going to get older. I'm going to have wrinkles!' "
Although she didn't opt for full surgery, Robin has previously admitted she has "the tiniest sprinkle of Botox twice a year."

Jay Z and Solange Knowles have "apologised to each other" following their elevator altercation.
Shocking footage of the singer hitting the rapper - who is her brother in law - after the Met Ball in New York surfaced last week, but the pair say they have since put the incident behind them.
A joint statement from Solange, Jay Z and his wife Beyonce - who was also in the elevator at the time - read: "As a result of the public release of the elevator security footage from Monday, May 5th, there has been a great deal of speculation about what triggered the unfortunate incident.
"But the most important thing is that our family has worked through it. Jay and Solange each assume their share of responsibility for what has occurred.
"They both acknowledge their role in this private matter that has played out in the public. They both have apologised to each other and we have moved forward as a united family."
In the soundless video, Solange can be seen lashing out with punches and kicks at '99 Problems' star Jay, before she is pulled off by a security guard.
The statement continued: "The reports of Solange being intoxicated or displaying erratic behavior throughout that evening are simply false.
"At the end of the day families have problems and we're no different. We love each other and above all we are family. We've put this behind us and hope everyone else will do the same."
New York's Standard Hotel, where the incident took place said it had fired the person who leaked the video yesterday (14.05.14).

Philip Seymour Hoffman will not be digitally recreated to appear in 'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1'.
The actor tragically died in February of a heroin overdose before he could complete the sci-fi film and director Francis Lawrence is determined to include the star in the scenes he couldn't complete, but will not settle for digitally enhancing his image into the movie.
He told thehungergamesexclusive.com: "We finished the majority of his work.
"I think he might have had eight to 10 days left on our schedule. In most of those scenes, Phil didn't have any dialogue.
"We are going to put him into those scenes, but we're only using real footage. We're not creating anything digital or a robotic version of him."
Shortly after his passing, studio Lionsgate, who is making the movies, said Philip would be recreated for scenes using CGI effects.
Producer Nina Jacobson said they may give some of the star's character, Plutarch Heavensbee's, lines to other characters, but said that would happen "only in circumstances that we are able to do that without undermining the intent of the scene."
Lionsgate also released the first picture of Philip in the movie today, (15.05.14) which sees his character sitting next to President Coin, played by Julianne Moore, with a wry smile on his face.
'The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1' starring Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson and Liam Hemsworth is set for release on November 21.

Elizabeth Olsen is nervous about starring in 'Avengers: Age of Ultron'.
The 25-year-old actress is one of the new stars to join the cast of the superhero movie - in which she will play the Scarlett Witch, alongside newcomer Aaron Taylor-Johnson, who will portray Quicksilver - and worries she has not had the same opportunity for character development as returning cast members.
She told MTV: "It is intimidating going into a production where everyone has their characters fully fleshed out and they know their weaknesses and they have their comedy.
"Aaron and I don't really have the luxury of time to develop those."
The returning cast includes Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Hemsworth as Thor, Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk, Chris Evans as Captain America, Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow, Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye and Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury.
Elizabeth added she can't wait for the full cast to get together for the press shot to promote the movie.
She added: "I'm so excited for that to happen. I really am having so much fun."
The 'Godzilla' actress is also pleased about getting to work with director Joss Whedon on the project, because of his enthusiasm and the way he likes to let characters develop naturally.
She added: "I am unique in this world, and so it's fun to do what I get to do, because it is different. And I think it also is fun for Joss because we're developing and creating something together, and he's getting really excited by it."

David Beckham wasn't the best soccer player in his class at school.
The 39-year-old retired sportsman visited Chase Lane Primary School in Chingford, London, where he studied as a youngster to speak with some of the students there.
When one of them asked him about his nascent career as a soccer player, he replied: "We had a few good players. I don't think I was the best in the class."
David - who played for the club Manchester United in the UK as well as the England team during his career - surprised the kids at the school in assembly.
In a video to promote Sainsbury's Active Kids, he told them: "I haven't been back here for 30 years so it's nice to be back."
Joking with the students, he added: "We had one teacher called Mr. McGee that really scared me, erm and it was lucky because he actually prepared me for [former Manchester United manager] Sir Alex Ferguson, who was also scary."
David - who has children Brooklyn, 15, Romeo, 11, Cruz, nine, and two-year-old daughter Harper with his wife Victoria - also launched his own brand of swimwear in London last night (14.05.14), at which he admitted before he married the former Spice Girls singer he took her on holiday and donned a pair of tiny swimming shorts to try and woo her.
He said: "When we went away for the first time I remember I took a pair of small, tight, dark blue Gucci trunks with me - I was obviously trying to impress her. They were really small, but they worked!"

Marc Anthony's dad used to tell him he was ugly.
The 'Do You Believe In Loneliness' singer - who was married to Jennifer Lopez from 2004 to 2011 - claims his parent helped him to build confidence by criticising his looks when he was growing up.
He told Men's Fitness magazine: "My dad would tell me, 'Son, I'm ugly and you're ugly - work on your personality'... I think it served me well. I think confidence is a powerful thing."
Although he's romanced a number of beautiful women over his career - including first wife, former Miss Universe Dayanara Torres - Marc doesn't think of his former girlfriends as "conquests".
He added: "The people I have ended up in relationships with are human beings. They're not conquests
"I think it would be demeaning if I gave some formula I have to meet so many beautiful women."
Jennifer - who has six-year-old twins Max and Emme with Marc - has recently spoke about how much hurt she felt following their divorce.
She said: "I went through a tremendous low. But I wouldn't change anything [about my past] because it made me who I am."

Emily Blunt "almost broke her nose" filming 'Edge of Tomorrow'.
'The Devil Wears Prada' actress takes on her first role as an action hero in her latest movie, and even though she prepared for it with Krav Maga martial arts, sprinting, gymnastics, yoga and weight training, it still hurt when she started doing stunts.
Emily - who appears alongside action veteran Tom Cruise in the film - said: "In my initiation to the action world, in stunt training I almost broke my nose.
"It wasn't even a cool story. I smacked myself in the face with my sword. Tom came into the trailer as I was sitting there with ice on my face and high-fived me and said, 'Welcome to the club.' I said, 'Dude, I'm in so much pain.' He said, 'Yeah!' "
Tom, 51, famously does all his own stunts, but even he isn't immune to mishaps, and fell off a car while shooting one scene.
He added to People magazine: "I was bleeding - I got slashed by the metal.
"But that stuff happens. The thing with Emily was, we never compared bruises. Making an action movie everyone's in pain, so you just don't mention it."

Harrison Ford has been approached to appear in a sequel to 'Blade Runner'.
The 71-year-old action movie star is being sought to reprise his role as bounty hunter Rick Deckhard in a sequel to the sci-fi classic, originally released in 1982.
Already on board with the project are Ridley Scott, who directed the original movie, and Hampton Fancher, who adapted the screenplay from Philip K. Dick's book 'Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?'
Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove, founders of Alcon Entertainment, who are developing the movie, told The Hollywood Reporter: "We believe that Hampton Fancher and Michael Green have crafted with Ridley Scott an extraordinary sequel to one of the greatest films of all time.
