Emily Deschanel is raising her child to be "99 percent vegan."
The 37-year-old actress, who has two-year-old son Henry with husband David Hornsby, stopped eating and wearing animal products entirely when she was 15 after watching a documentary about how food choices affect health and the environment, but her family isn't quite as committed to the diet.
The 'Bones' star said: "Henry is 99-percent vegan because my husband is not 100-percent vegan."
The brunette beauty tries to spend as much time as possible with her son and admits her exercise routine has suffered since she became a mother.
She told PEOPLE.com: "You could be dealing with one issue, and then the next day it's gone and you're dealing with something else. I don't know how things change so quickly or how much he can surprise you.
"You work all of these hours and when you have time off, you don't want to spend it working out while raising a child. [But it is] important ... to be healthy and show him that that's important."
The actress has the summer off and plans "to hang out with my son, put him to bed, and cuddle - do all of the fun things I love doing with him."
She added: "I love this age because I can communicate with him so well and have conversations."

Kendra Wilkinson's husband allegedly checked into a motel near their home on Friday (20.06.14).
Former NFL star Hank Baskett - who has four-year-old son Hank Jr. and one-month-old daughter Alijah with the reality TV star - was spotted looking "downtrodden" while speeding away from their Los Angeles mansion in his white Jeep at around 4 p.m., sparking rumours they had a major bust-up.
An eyewitness told RadarOnline.com: "Hank was wearing a royal blue NBA shirt and long khaki shorts. He got out of the Jeep with a woman who appeared to possibly be one of the couples' baby nurses because she was wearing a medical type uniform.
"They went into the office of the motel and then pulled the jeep around to the other side where their room was located. Hank appeared disoriented and downtrodden. At one point, he kicked the ground."
The National Enquirer source added: "An hour later, he emerged from the room but then returned back inside."
Hank, 31, spent most of Friday with his father at a Major League Gaming Competition in Anaheim, California, but his wife hasn't spoken to her family since October.
The 'Kendra On Top' star's mother, Patti Wilkinson, recently claimed fame had ruined the 28-year-old former Playboy model.
She said: "When Kendra was on 'The Girls Next Door' I think that she was down to earth, she was fun, it was all new to her and exciting. That was Kendra, that definitely was Kendra.
"As years go by Hollywood has crept in and I think it has changed her and not for the better and I never thought it would happen."

Helena Bonham Carter doesn't like being told what to do.
The 48-year-old actress - who has two children, Billy Ray, 10, and Nell, six, with long-time partner Tim Burton - admits she hates being ordered around and prefers to make all of her own decisions, especially when it comes to her wardrobe.
Asked about her eclectic fashion sense, the 'Lone Ranger' star told E! News: "I've had a stylist once or twice, but it doesn't really work out because basically, I don't like being told what to wear"
She added: "I don't like being told what to do, so there's no point. A lot of people suggest that I should."
Earlier this month, Helena revealed she struggled with low self-esteem when she first found fame as a teenager, but no longer cares what people think about her.
She told The Guardian newspaper: "I wasn't very confident; I was cripplingly shy. And, at the age of 19, you are all too aware of how people are perceiving you. I remember reading the first profile of me that was printed in a magazine and thinking: 'Oh good, now I'm going to find out what I'm really like.' But no. That's not the best way of judging yourself."

Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez enjoyed a romantic date on Friday night (20.06.14).
The on-again, off-again couple - who first started dating in 2010 - were spotted leaving upmarket steak restaurant Mastro's in Beverly Hills, California after rekindling their relationship again earlier this month.
Following their expensive meal, the 'Confident' hitmaker, 20, whisked the brunette beauty, 21, to the cinema at the nearby Westfield Century City mall, where they went to see the new comedy, 'Think Like A Man,' according to the MailOnline.
The 'Spring Breakers' actress was spotted wrapping her arm around the Canadian star's back, as they followed two bodyguards out of the theatre after the screening.
The newly-reunited couple have been inseparable over the past few days, spending time in a recording studio together and at a bible study class on Wednesday (18.06.14), where a source said they appeared "smitten" with one another.
The eyewitness said: "They were very lovey dovey and cute. They came and left together with a few friends
"They sat next to each other and listened to the sermon and were smitten with each other."
Justin won back the 'Come & Get It' singer, who sought treatment in rehab in January, back after vowing to curb his wild ways and recently presented Selena with a £6,000 Segway in a bid to prove they could have "good, clean fun" together.

Lady Gaga has been blasted by PETA for dressing up her dog.
The 'Applause' hitmaker has come under heavy criticism from the animal charity for her treatment of pet pooch Asia, who has been seen wearing weighty jewellery and earrings.
PETA said: "Lady Gaga may choose to decorate herself with elaborate and even uncomfortable outfits, but Asia doesn't get to make that choice.
"Although it seems pretty clear that Lady Gaga loves Asia, we think Asia - and all dogs - are adorable without all the added flair."
Their comments come after the 28-year-old pop star - famous for her extravagant and outrageous style - posted photos on Instagram which showed the pup wearing a heavy necklace on its face.
PETA have been joined by other animal rights groups in criticising Gaga for her actions.
Dog's Trust veterinary director Paula Boyden added: "We are shocked to see the pictures of his puppy adorned with heavy jewellery.
"Dressing dogs in pseudo-human clothing not only ridicules and makes a spectacle of them but treats them as a fashion accessory rather than a living animal."

Harrison Ford feels "like a battered" old car after throwing himself at movie stunts.
The 'Star Wars' actor - who was recently injured on the set of the sci-fi saga - compared himself to a classic motor and admitted he brings it on himself due to his dedication.
Speaking to the Daily Express newspaper, he quipped: "I am like a battered old Ford.
"And I keep on coming back for more. If it doesn't look real on the screen than an audience does not believe what it sees."
The star - who was talking about his stunts before his latest injury occurred - insisted he is starting to know how to stop himself from getting too badly "hurt".
He explained: "Although i do my own running, jumping and falling, I always try to keep myself from being hurt. So I know what will work and what won't."
Meanwhile, he also admitted he never expected his big screen career to last as long as it has done.
He said: "I honestly never thought my acting would last thing long. All I've done is try to get scripts which interest me and make sure I prepare as well as I possibly can.
"After that, it's a matter of hoping that people like what they see and keep on going back. It's not an 'art'. I simply enjoy it as a great job."

Emily Blunt thinks her baby daughter is a good "travel buddy".
The 31-year-old actress took her four-month-old daughter Hazel, whom she shares with her husband John Krasinski, with her when she promoted her new movie 'Edge of Tomorrow' earlier this month and she insists the tiny tot is settling into her new jet-setting life.
Speaking to Ireland's RTÉ Ten, she said: "She's a good little travel buddy. It's tough to leave and go and work as this is my first time back since she was born but I just see her whenever I can and every hour, any moment, I have free she's with me and it's alright."
Meanwhile, the blonde beauty recently admitted that since becoming a mother her priorities have changed and she's going to be more selective about the roles she takes on in the future.
She said previously: "I think I'll be very specific about what I do because it does switch your focus and everything in me just wants to be with her right now so it'll be interesting."

Jake Gyllenhaal thinks Rachel McAdams is the "complete package".
The 'Brokeback Mountain' actor recently fuelled rumours he is dating the 35-year-old actress - with whom he is currently filming 'Southpaw' - after they were spotted out together on a number of occasions, and friends say they were instantly attracted to each other.
A source said: "There is no denying the electric chemistry between Jake and Rachel. The attraction was instant. From the moment they started working together, Jake and Rachel just connected intellectually and emotionally.
"For Jake, Rachel is the complete package. She's incredibly smart and well versed in arts, politics and culture, but she's not a show-off. Of course, it helps that she's gorgeous."
However, the duo are hesitant about taking their romance to the next level because Jake, 33, has had an on/off relationship with model Alyssa Miller since last summer, and Rachel is dating music manager Patrick Sambrook.
The insider told OK! magazine: "They are tip-toeing around the issue, but with them hanging out with each other all the time, the situation is bound to come to a head.
"For the time being, Rachel and Jake are in the flirting stages."

Nicole Richie gets up an hour before her children.
The House of Harlow designer - who has daughter Harlow, six, and son Sparrow, four, with husband Joel Madden - thinks it's important to get some alone time away from her kids, so she wakes up earlier than them to watch the sun rise every day.
She told People magazine: "I am up before the sun every morning. I like a good hour by myself while everyone is still sleeping. I go out in the garden, relax and have some hot water with lemon. Just take some quiet time before I start my day."
The reality TV star, 32, has recently developed a love of gardening in the mornings and admits she's turned her back yard into a vegetable patch to encourage her family to eat raw foods.
She said previously: "I just started growing our own garden. I'm home a lot and we're growing our own fruits and vegetables. There's so many things in food right now and it's important for people to know and be educated on whatever they're putting into their body."
However, it's not just Nicole's determination to eat healthily that is impressive as her choice of outfit while planting her seeds and bulbs couldn't be more fitting.
She said: "I love wearing my little vintage peasant dresses, but I garden in the morning and I'm really cold in the morning. I end up with a North Face [jacket], my husband's baseball cap, colourful sweatpants that I slept in the night before, and leopard slippers."
